Who do you think will win the Scrapyard wars?

IGetMoreAssThanAToiletSeat

I kind of might know where this is going and I think Luke might have the advantage. I still use my E8400 everyday so I have a bit of an understanding where Luke will land.

I just installed Evolve on my E8400 and I was getting 60 FPS on medium settings @ 1920x1080

Also I remember some saying back then that the C2Q had a bit of a lag when talking between the 2 duel cores over the bridge and that's why I went with a C2D back then.

luke because he got the 290 and linus got a measly 7950. the difference is big but whos cpu would bottleneck more id say lukes but gpu standpoint luke would win.

CA-RIP, Cz up hoes down, bang these hoes out with my rounds.

Yes CPU bottleneck will be a factor here more so for Luke but what if Linus's PC does not bottleneck at all and is still worse than Luke's?

I had E8400 since 2008 and it was the last component that got upgraded. So for a while I had E8400+AMD7870 - I can tell from experience how their pc's are going to perform.

The CPU was definitely bottlenecking, very hard, however, you will not see that unless you do actual gameplay tests - none but one of the built in benchmarks showed any significant changes in average FPS compared to my new Ci5 3550P. Only Hard Reset benchmark improved the FPS by a twofold at least, which was pretty exciting :)

However, since LTT's gaming benchmarks are normally done with real gameplay - the bottlenecking will very much be visible. This being said, I still think Luke wins this round, since Q6600 is actually not that much better compared to E8400. You might think 2 extra cores would help CPU greatly, however, it's simply the matter of a very old architecture.

There's a beautiful article on tom's hardware that I always use as a reference, since it was the main reason I decided against swapping my E8400 for Q9550 or something:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ivy-bridge-wolfdale-yorkfield-comparison,3487.html

The outcome was pretty grim - even though E8x00 and Q9xx0 lines were pretty beastly back in their day, nowadays they can barely compete with entry level Pentiums or even Celerons. And no amount of overclocking will overcome this. Besides, Q6600 is one process node behind - 65nm versus 45mn of E8400, which means it's overclocking potential is very limited in comparison.

It's gonna be a close one, but Linus will have the best rounded system. But never know what sort of mystery lies ahead

I also went with the E8400 cause there was a review about how the quad cores had a latency on the bridge between the 2 duel cores. witch actually made it bad for gaming back then.

firestrike may be but tomb raider will destroy his dual core and his gpu will be used less than linus' 7950, also dirt3 is pretty easy to run cpu wise but linus has a great board and cooler and should be able to hit 3ghz (333x9) fairly easily depending on ram speed maybe even 3.2+ and that game loves fast multiple cores with cache.

I switched my wife's e8400 @ 3.9 to a q6600 @ 3.6  Overall i'm getting better result with the q6600.  it's much smooter on todays game.

the difference between the 7950 oced and a 290 won't be a lot due to bottlenecking

Linus has the legendary Q6600, not the Q8300.

Luke has the E8400.

Linus = Q6600 + 7950

Luke = E8400 + R9 290

Both of their systems will bottleneck their cards really hard. But it is noteworthy that both of their cpus are good overclockers. Especially the Q6600. The E8400 might be relatively newer, but the Q6600's overclocking potential is the reason it's considered legendary.

Linus may have a sub-10% advantage at the CPU. Luke has a 10%-ish advantage on the GPU. I forgot what games they'll use to benchmark. But if it doesn't utilize multicore processing that much, then Luke's E8400 won't be much of a problem. Hence, Luke will win.

I know but my q8300 is pretty much better.

The 7950 to 290 without a bottleneck is more like ~35% I doubt it'll be that much of a differences.

I just did a Benchmark of my E8400 stock clock on CPU and a 100MHz overclock on GPU. I used Basic Edition 3D Mark 11. If you have some screenshot it would be interesting to see what others get with there old CPU.

Here is what I got.

Definitely Linus, he got so lucky with the Core 2 Quad, the Duo Luke has is gonna be his biggest worry, will probably bottleneck that R9 290 quite a bit... wonder if either of them will get any overclocks, if Luke can overclock his Core 2 Duo he could have the better system, definitely has better graphics card. be interesting to see how it plays out, definitely can't wait until part 3 drops! :)

Im not really the most experienced when it comes to bottlenecking, but I feel like it depends on the tests they do. if they choose something that doesnt need alot of cpu power then linus is in trouble. But it should be pretty neat to see. Im going with luke on this one.

Cant wait to see the next episode
