Luke will win the benchmarks in every game that doesn't really use 4 threads. The c2d can overclock higher and will have higher single core performance. However Linus is really good at winning the competition by technicalities and cheating.

all of these tests use multiple threads, any game that didnt (sims2?) wouldn't use the gpu's above 10% at best

Keep in mind that E8400 keeps up with stock AMD FX in single-threaded performance...

most core 2 duo's/quads at 4ghz keep up with modern pentiums at 3ghz in single threaded performance.

Ill say what I said in the Youtube comments, I think it will be very close, maybe with a slight edge to Luke . I think the R9 290 will Bottleneck in Tomb Raider but not in Valley or 3D Mark hopefully. I think the 7950 will have a suitable CPU so it will get full performance. I dont know how far the 290 will bottleneck but I can imagine probably a fair bit. Its really exciting but what a steal for Luke with that card and kudos for Linus with the T shirts and putting together the series it is nail biting and Ill look forward to seeing more episodes in the future!!

GPU-wise I think Luke will win, but that C2Q is a great advantage for Linus, Linus has 8 SETS of RAM (jk it's only 2 sets)and some fancy motherboard plus the antec PSU and the cooler, that cooler could give a higher headroom for overclocking, but his GPU is a bit old.

 

I vote for Linus but  Luke has that damn 290

I notice really bad bottlenecking on my older system due to the CPU, my good GPU never gets near topping out, so even though Luke has the better GPU I think we'll see that the CPU bottleneck will be quite detrimental to his overall performance. I think that it will be pretty close though.

Q8300 at stock bottlenecks a 750ti..

Both C2D and C2Q are going to bottleneck hard.

I think it's more of which doesn't doesn't get held back as much. Whoever can overclock the most can probably win

Linus has the legendary Q6600, not the Q8300.

Luke has the E8400.

 

Linus = Q6600 + 7950

Luke = E8400 + R9 290

 

Both of their systems will bottleneck their cards really hard. But it is noteworthy that both of their cpus are good overclockers. Especially the Q6600. The E8400 might be relatively newer, but the Q6600's overclocking potential is the reason it's considered legendary.

 

Linus may have a sub-10% advantage at the CPU. Luke has a 10%-ish advantage on the GPU. I forgot what games they'll use to benchmark. But if it doesn't utilize multicore processing that much, then Luke's E8400 won't be much of a problem. Hence, Luke will win.

its going to be close, that quad is simply 2 duo's put together, sometimes youll find duos working better since they are making less heat and could run higher clocks. It really depends on what king of programs, benchmarks they are going to run their rigs. Had q6600 watercooled 4.5ghz temps 70max, when playing around 60, that processor is amazing when hitting 3.5ghz line and you really could put any card you like and it wont bottleneck. was running for short amount of time 2x 6970 on crossfire, only fried one. Had no bottleneck.
So my gues is Linus rig will win, performing really good, especially if hes getting something better than stock cooling.
Luke should get bottleneck. Still would take his rig instead of linus, dat 290 is sexy. Just swap the e for q in future ;D

it comes down to firestrike

it doesnt care about cpu too much or so i've read but will annihilate gpu's so luke should win by the slimmest of margins (who knows).

linus has a great board so a 3ghz overclock is the minimum he can expect so will not bottleneck that much in dirt3 which loves cores, clocks and cache (and IPC which is equal here) but luke will come close if he manages to hit 4ghz as the game is so easy to run.

however tomb raider SUCKS on dual cores and still easy to run but atleast its well optimised and gpu's really get to stretch thier legs on multi threaded systems and no matter how much luke overclocks it wont match the c2q.
