As if my decisions weren't difficult enough, I've found another problem,

Do I go with Triple Monitor surround, or Oculus Rift, for Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen?

I know a LOT of you are probably going to scream "OCULUS!!!!!!" at me, but I'd like to take every pro and con into account before spending this kind of money. Which will function better with dual gtx 970's in SLI? What are the drawbacks to the Oculus? etc.

I know the choice may seem obvious, but considering that the Oculus is visual only, it seems like it could be a "waste". To explain what I mean:

If while playing the Elite Dangerous with the Oculus Rift, I could look sideways and actually move my hand to flick buttons and control my ship, the choice would be completely obvious. But as far as I know (and I could be wrong, if I am then this entire thread is pointless because the choice is so completely obvious it's painful)

So.....what would you do?

(I would greatly appreciate @Slick and @Linus 's opinions as well, should they deem it important enough to respond)

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

Not sure how it'll work in elite dangerous tho.

I really should not have included potato lol

Well a potato is good in a lot of situations. With a good example being a computer that outperforms a next gen console.

This is partly what I have been thinking, as well as the difficulty of smoking whilst gaming while wearing something that completely blocks out your vision. Not to mention drinking.

Plus I've heard of people getting motion sickness/headaches after using it for a long time, apparently it's exactly like staring a centimetre away from a monitor

Well, I sit in front of my monitor about 12-16 hours a day so...

There's also the fact of which will be a bigger E-peen to show off to my console buddies, 3 monitors running 1 game at ultra, or an oculus?

I gotta say, I'm leaning towards the triple monitors...

The Oculus Rift is a joke product that's in perpetual development.   It hasn't gone anywhere in two years, and it's not going to go anywhere.... even with Fuckerberg's estate behind it.   And the software behind it is garbage.

Get three monitors.  It's useful, and would have resale value if you ever wanted/needed to get something different.   No one wants a used Oculus Rift.

I was lucky to try the oculus dk2 at Bett Show in London this year. All the vr headsets and so on would force devs to completely rethink camera control for a game.. I dont have moniton sickness and so on but man.. I wanted to puke so bad when i was on the virtual rollercoaster xD

I'm waiting, to see how things turn out with Occulus/Morpheus and with G-Synch Free-Synch.

If you forced me to make a choice I'd go with Occulus or Morpheus but I personally think it's too early to say.

Also, Occulus is 3D.

Overall Occulus is probably going to be the least expensive option (the equivalent experience and probably even more for cheaper than a three monitor setup). As I understand it Morpheus won't be released unless Occulus is a success and my intuition tells me that if Morpheus is released it's going to be an "Aspirational Brand" and might be higher quality at a higher price point than Occulus (Sony have already kind of made a start since they've already developed and released a headset for for use with some of their T.V.s).

I really do think that Occulus will be a persistent future, if not the future for gaming.

Looking at it from a cash standpoint: three panel setup with 3D means at least the central panel being 3D capable, and so hopefully extra-bright (expensive and might not match the brightness of the other monitors) and, if you go with nVidia (who I understand have better quality and more hassle-free 3D) you need the 3D vision kit. Where I am that whole setup would probably cost me over #1,000 before looking at the hardware needed to run it (probably over or around #1,700 for a triple 3D monitor setup.

Also, as I understand it 3 panel setups are great for simualations but not so good for standard games (at least according to Jay (Jayztwocents)). Regular 3D games stretch the image in the side monitors and so as I understand it there's kind of an acceleration effect that's really dis-orienting.

So I guess, having thought about it in writing this post I'd have to say wait for Occulus, but try before you buy because you might find that headset VR makes you motion sick.

If the question is, should I blow all of my money right now or wait just a little longer to see how things pan out, then (unless you're using the money to get away from imminent danger) the answer should probably always be to wait and see how things pan out.

Edit: If those are the only choices I would have voted for Occulus but I didn't since I don't think you're a moron for having to ask.

Edit: Also, Occulus is backwards compatible. You can play flat-panel games with an Occulus but not the other way around, and Occulus games (in terms of their interface with the user) will be designed and built, from the ground up, almost completely differently from flat panel games .
