How well does the i7 4790k perform?

So I am making a new system, and have decided to go with an i5 4690k over the 8320, I will be doing mainly multi core stuff, an later on I will upgrade to the i7 4790k, how well does that perform in multi core performance, in compairison to the i5 4690k?

If you're going to be getting an i7, just save for the i7. It's a waste of $200 if otherwise. The i7 performs a fair bit better for heavily threaded applications, but for gaming, it's pretty much the same.

This x100 if you wanted a place holder CPU then get a $50 pentium for a few months while you save up for the i7, and sell it for $30 later - still a waste of money though

I did the place holder deal. Albeit, I just really wanted to get away from laptop gaming, but it wasn't -so- bad.

What did you go for? a pentium? im using a G3220 in my server as a place holder, was £40 :D but honestly for what the server does, I doubt I will upgrade it now, (will drop my 4770k in when I upgrade my main rig)

It was a G3220 as well; it allowed me to update the BIOS for my z87 board before buying the 4690k and freaking out about it, too. The G3220 is now in one of my friend's computers. He was trying to get away from laptop gaming, too. I wouldn't particularly call it a waste in my scenario, as he's only using it as a placeholder, too. Later, I'll probably move it into a steambox when he's done using it. Definitely worth the $40.

Edit: Also was really stuck on Intel. Like, I refused to even look at AMD.

that won't make sense at all just save some more and go straight to the i7...

Also about your question in a well multi-threaded load the hyper-threading will bring around 30 to 35% performance increase depending on the load...it's defenetly something to consider.

Then I guess I will go straight for the i7!

Yeah im not a massive AMD fan, not that I would purposefully avoid them I have just always had a positive experiance with intel

the G3220 is an underrated little guy

More like ignored now that the G3258 is on the market. I wait for coupons and I got my G3258 for ~$45

honestly more people should look at the Pentium line though they perform surprisingly well in games

to OP the 4790K does quite well in threaded applications and has very good efficiency per core instruction so I think it is a really good option, but not a massive upgrade for someone who already has a 4690K running the same clock speeds (4.4GHz correct?) IF not just overclock the 4690K for now and maybe upgrade to a next gen i7 when they come out and benefit from even more efficiency

I am addicted to building gaming PCs but I don't have a great reason to stop...yet...

The 4790k is a great CPU for what it's worth.  You can spend a lot of money for a 5960X which will kill the 479k0 in regards to benchmarks.  Gaming.....my opinion it's useless but again that's just my opinion.  Who know's, maybe Ubisoft will create shitty port of a console game and require that we all have 5960X with 980's to play the game.

I have a potato!

Yeah, they perform well in games except Ubisoft ones since they CBA to make their games have efficient scheduling for two threads. In AC Unity, Watch Dogs etc. an i3 @ 3.4GHz will get 2-3x the performance of a Pentium @ 5GHz lol. But in pretty much any non-Ubisoft game a Pentium G3258 when OC'd will perform as well as an i3 or FX CPU.

Intel i5-4690K @ 3.8GHz || Gigabyte Z97X-SLI || 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz || Asus GTX 760 2GB @ 1150 / 6400 || 128GB A-Data SX900 + 1TB Toshiba 7200RPM || Corsair RM650 || Fractal 3500W
