Do you shop around, or mostly buy your components from one retailer?

SteveGrabowski

I mostly use one retailer (ebuyer) unless it's cheaper elsewhere.

I was on a tight budget my last build so i resorted to ebaying and local classifieds. ✌️

so, it's kind of the other way around here in our place.

there are lots of shops here to browse components. I think that's what you guys call a microcenter? not sure if that creates a surplus, but shops usually only keep a few variants with high quantities..(few choices at most shops but mainstream ones will almost always be available, can't prove this though)

what I do, is check online for prices and reviews..and PERSONALLY go to places for a particular component..you'd be very lucky if you're building a rig and a single shop will have ALL of the parts you want. Otherwise, you'll have to decide whether to buy you're next best option, not at all, and check another shop. no problem if you're just buying a single component.

i did call up the shop beforehand when I built mine, and the tech said that the h97m-d3h I browsed was available..I got there and it is not. I got the z97m-d3h which was out of budget and the other h-mobos available were h61 (not for a haswell)..

finally, everybody here has to bring whatever they bought home, lucky if you have a personal car.

i would sure love to try buying online and have the items at my door, but online shopping here must be done in caution as there are LOTS OF SCAMS here (wouldn't even bother talking about that here)

Amazon.

They are priced competitively, no sales tax for my state, and I have a card that gives 5% off. A lot of money saved rather than shopping at a brick and mortar store.

EDIT: I forgot about Prime shipping too.

I buy from practically everywhere, although I spend most of my money at Amazon, due to the student prime and two day shipping on almost any item. Also one day shipping can be pretty cheap depending on the item.

I shop almost strictly Newegg for computer components, the times that I have bought from Amazon, I have gotten used items even when I clarify that I want NEW. My first build, I ordered a AMD Phenom ii x6 1090T and when It got to me, the Amazon box was clean and no visible signs of tampering or abuse but the CPU package was resealed, the CPU had thermal paste still on it, and about 20 pins were bent so they were laying flat on the underside of the PCB. never again will I buy computer components on Amazon. And with all that said, they still had me pay a restock fee and made me pay for shipping.

I just used Amazon for my New Build. I cannot afford the stupid delivery prices to where I live, but with Amazon it's Free and relatively speedy :-)

(FYI - One retailer tried to charge me over £18 on delivery for a single Hard Drive that was £35)

lowest price on pcpp with non-rediculious shipping wins my award.

I always shop around online for the lowest price, but if the price difference is not too much, my preference is NCIX since the nearest store is less than a 5-minute drive from my house. Very convenient for same-day pickups and no worrying about the abuse that shipped components go through.

if i want something quick then i use NCIX as its not to far away and they use Canada post so it comes straight to my mail box within a few days.

mainly use NCIX and Newegg Canada. sometimes used ebay and very rare use amazon. used to use tiger direct but i live on the west coast now so don't use them much now.

so yeah i would say, NCIX, Newegg, Tiger, ebay.

will browse and compare prices, i actually like the layout of the newegg online shopping,

got to love Asus components

I have Frys near me and they price match, so I always go there. Best Buy also price matches too so on the rare occurrence that Fry's doesn't have what I need, there is always Best Buy.

Sucks paying tax though.
