You'll be fine. What PSU brand though? Better be reliable. Don't want a 5 dollar PSU blowing up your 400 dollar cards.

Yeah you'll be fine. But why 2 970's instead of one 980?

970 SLI > 980

Yeah, but unless he is gaming at higher than 1080p. 980 allows you to get a second later on, opposed to  getting 3 970's which would just result in issues

@akbarriz

You shouldnt have any issues as long as it is a reputable PSU and hopefully rated as bronze or higher classification.

**edit if it is seasonic it should be very capable of doing what you ask it... as long as you're polite ;)

$1k compared to $650 for 10% more performance is wasted money.

Opinions I guess

Nah man, it's facts.

20% more performance for only 10% more or something like that.

I meant that, assuming he's not going higher than 1440p, a single 980 would be better. That lets him "futureproof", so if he is in need of more performance later, he can get another 980. However this is assuming OP is gaming at 60Hz

But people say that all the time and later down the line they are told to get "this card, it does better than yours".

It's a constant loop.

oh, good grief..

First of all, there is no such thing as futureproof, not even in quotation marks. Futureproof on this forum is a swear word.

Second of all, this.

2 970s perform almost doubly as well as a single 970, which makes it WAAAAY more than just 20% over a single 980 for very nearly the same price as that 980. You are getting much, much more performance per dollar by going with two 970s, and you can easily do some 4K games on that setup as well.

970 sli is better than a single 980, by the time people want more power than the 980, we'll be recommending whole different cards. Remember that nowadays we barely recommend a gtx 700 series for sli.

PSU is plenty, i believe linus said his sli 980 system used less than 600 watt, and i believe that was 4 way sli.
