pentium G3258 revisited --

hi there! new to the forums here, just wonder about something: does the g3258 still make sense right now? I mean, I saw linus's video (

) and he said that you really need more cores in today's environment, just wondering, im building a budget pc, would it make sense to go with a g3258 with an after-market cooler such as (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118099) and over-clock the crap outta it, or would it make more sense to go for an amd flavour..? if so, which would you recommend?

If your not doing heavy gaming it makes for a wonderful general use cpu.

System CPU : Ryzen 9 5950 doing whatever PBO lets it. Motherboard : Asus B550 Wifi II RAM 80GB 3600 CL 18 2x 32GB 2x 8GB GPUs Vega 56 & Tesla M40 Corsair 4000D Storage: many and varied small (512GB-1TB) SSD + 5TB WD Green PSU 1000W EVGA GOLD

Not worth it, a novelty at most.

If going on budget, get a 6300 + aftermarket cooler and overclock the crap out of that. you'll get way better performance (and probably cheaper too) out of that combo than the 1 core artifact.

Skyrim doesn't even open unless it detects a minimum  2core CPU.

For the same price of a 6300+Mobo+Heatsink you could get an i5 4440 and an h81 Mobo which would be better than the 6300

Spoiler

i5 4670k, GTX 970, 12GB 1600, 120GB SSD, 240GB SDD, 1TB HDD, CM Storm Quickfire TK, G502, VG248QE, ATH M40x, Fractal R4

Spoiler

i5 4278U, Intel Iris Graphics, 8GB 1600, 128GB SSD, 2560x1600 IPS display, Mid-2014 Model

Spoiler

All the parts are here, just need to get customized cords to connect the motherboard to the front panel.

But no watercooler block (so no super overclocking :P)

Thanks for the replies! I have a pretty tight budget of about 5-600 dollars, but the only thing I worried about is the CPU and motherboard, would it help if I showed my pcpartpicker list..? I'm gonna be using this build for a while. Mostly generally, but probably some gaming every now and then.

The thing is the 6300 doesn't lead down to a good upgrade path, leads to the 8350 which is a pretty scary path compared to pentium to i5. Considering the thing most likely to be kept when upgrading is mb ram and hard drives as they don't have much to break

What games are you looking to play and what resolution? also do you already have a windows key or will that be part of the budget?

If you're at a budget around <$800, and wouldn't want to deal with the power comsumption of AMD, its fine..

power consumption really isnt a factor anymore.

sure, you'll need to use another 25-50 watts on your PSU.

most people get a PSU thats around 100-300 more than they need anyway.

and it never really costs much etiher.

not starting a war here. im just stating that power consumption is not a field of comparrison that should make you decide on something. (unless its batshit crazy like THE NEW ULTIMATE SPACE HEATER, EVEN HOTTER THAN A 4 WAY 480 CONFIG, THIS SIGNLE CORE BEAST AT 9000 WATTS)

Watch out for each other. Love everyone and forgive everyone, including yourself. Forgive your anger, forgive your guilt. Your shame. Your sadness. Embrace and open up your love, your joy, your truth, and most especially your heart.

Power consumption isn't something that disappears in technology advancement it's based on price. Where I live 50 watts could differ 8-12 dollars yearly and 50w isn't alot

Power consumption isn't a problem that much to me... My power supply should be able to take it, and I do like that 6600 amd idea, there's cheap motherboards that can do crossfire as well as usb 3.0 that work well. And games..? Well I wanna play sky rim, I'm new to of gaming see :,) and I do wanna try shadow or mordor. Though if that can't run well on an r9 270 then no worries, I do have a ps4. But i only worry about the dual core g3258 for future uses, as it may not be able to handle regular use later on..

If you're able to upgrade later on, then Z97 and the Pentium are pretty good. Or you could save up a little more and get a dual-core Hyper-Threaded i3.

Well skyrim needs 2+ cores to even open, shadows will not even run at 5 fps with that CPU.

I've used an FX4300 clocked at 4.4ghz + gtx 660 for a while, and it ran many games really well. Just make sure to get a ~30-50$ watercooler for the amd chip and you're set!

Even with a gtx 970 + 4300 i got 60fps on AAA titles and 100+fps on other games.

(Now rockin an i7 5820 + gtx 970)

http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/nithiiyan/saved/pjhBD3 - pc build for amd- oh and I'm new to pic gaming.. So I like the looks of some mainstream games like shadow of mordor and sky rim.. Which look cool :)

Look at the build I linked it's better in just about every way as well as being cheaper.
