Over 1500 Mhz GPU Clock on the Strix 970? Oh Yes We can.

LarsReviews

FREAKING 1501 Mhz stable on the Asus Strix 970. I also reached 1700 Mhz for a few minutes, but then my PC completely crashed.

Edit: I could set the voltage all the way back again. Anybody know why I can't go over 1400 MHz in GPU tweak?

I also had it ran with less power, but it is hard to find the sweet spot and voltages don't really go all the way up to the max, so I think it is fine.

Yeah last time I looked I got like 1511MHz on an MSI GPU. The 970s are a really nice card to OC in general.

It wouldn't let me set it manually to 1500 for some reason. Do you know why?

My top 970 G1 does 1600 mhz, but the second one I just got the other day doesn't like going above 1520 :(

I need to get a custom loop and murder them with voltage to see if they'll do 1700 xD

why do I feel like the only person on the planet who knows that is not true. 1475 average for OC 970's but what is their base clock?

I was only 9 years old. I loved Fifflaren so much, I had all the NiP merchandise and matches pirated. I prayed to Fifflaren every night before bed. Thanking him for the life I have been given. Fifflaren is love I say. Fifflaren is life. My dad hears and calls me a fuckhead. I knew he was just jelly of my passion for Fifflaren. I called him a Sw@yer. He hits me and sends me to go to sleep. I'm crying now, and my face hurts. I lay in bed and it's really cold. A warmth is moving towards me. I feel someone touching me. I feel someone touching me. It's Fifflaren. I am so happy. He whispers in my ear; "this is my pyjama". He grabs me with his powerful Swedish hands and puts me on my hands and knees. I'm ready. I spread my ass cheeks for Fifflaren. He penetrates my butt-hole. It hurts so much but I do it for Fifflaren. I can feel my butt tearing as my eyes start to water. I push against his force. I want to please Fifflaren. He roars a viking roar as he fills my butt with his love. My dad walks in. Fifflaren looks straight into his eyes and says; "He is a ninja now". Fifflaren is love, Fifflaren is life

It did more, but after re installing GPU tweak, I can't go any higher. Also I lowered the voltage, still runs at that Mhz when benchmarking. .

Ah well, still an excellent overclock nonetheless. :D

What isn't true? 1475 isn't a bad speed for an average OC.

no it isn't. Not at all. But keep in mind what average stock speeds are for these cards, anywhere from 1200-1315 already. That percentage gain is nothing by comparison of other nvidia cards. They are terrible for overclocking, they just have really high clocks compared to everything else. That is like saying a cpu that runs 4.3ghzstock is a great overclocker because it can hit 4.7ghz on average compared to last generation's 3.2hz stock with a 4.4ghz average overclock. Sorry if it seems like a small rant, I just look at percentages because clock for clock against different architectures means nothing.

I haven't seen a single 970 sold that hasn't been "superclocked" or equivalent branding. Given how I'm not even sure the reference card exists, what is the "stock" clock?

1178 is stock boost clock from nvidia's website. Some thing like a gtx 780 stock boost is 900mhz. 780ti is 928. Both 780 and 780ti average 1200mhz without voltage increase. That is about a 33% clock boost vs 25. But we both no such cards exist with the 900 series (many do with the 700 series even some aftermarket ones don't go past the ghz mark), most of the 900's clock to close or beyond 1300. Soooo 15% boost on a manual overclock?

It wouldn't let me set it manually to 1500 for some reason. Do you know why?

Cards don't exactly OC by the number. They have a weird "set" step of numbers they'll use. For example, if I set my 780Ms to "950" on the core (via nVidia Inspector) they'll only clock to 940. But if I set to 954, they'll go straight to 954. Same thing happens with a 1030MHz OC. It won't sit at 1030, but rather 1020. I can get it to sit flat at 1058 though.

Don't worry about it. Just pick the closest setting it'll let you set and that should work. Unless you're in nVidia Inspector which lets you do single-digit adjustments; you'd need to launch a game or a stress tester to make it keep its max clocks and check it in real-time, then bump it until you find the limit that makes it jump and keep it.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

it ran for 6 hours straight at around a 100% load with 1501 Mhz. I would guess this means it is a stabile. Also the coil whine disappeared after the overclock.

Sorry op, many others 970 owners can go higher than that on stock voltage.
