Tech Things You Dont Know But Are Too Afraid To Ask.

why do people still use macs when windows can do everything a mac can do and more at a cheaper Price?

High quality construction, good support.  When people don't know much about tech, it's what's on the outside that counts.  As pretty much any computer has enough power to do what they want.  Macs have the most trouble-free operation if you're not doing anything too complicated.

Look at that fancy title.

Edit:

Oh right a question. Why are 16x (or just any high speed lane) lanes generally the prefered top slot on motherboards?

I want to put a sound card in my system without restricting airflow to my video card, shouldnt it just be standard to have a 4x lane first, followed by a 16x??

My asrock 990fx extreme3 has a 1x in the top slot.

Defragmenting basically reads all of the data on a disc and re-organizes the readable data into as little space as possible (basically re-writing the data), while erasing any data that's not needed (fragments). SSDs don't like frequent write/erase cycles. SSDs are fine if you write to them occasionally and don't remove/delete files rarely.

Compare feature to feature: SATA ports, back i/o, chipsets (some are better than others), max allowable memory, memory standard (max memory frequency supported), etc. Brand name is also a good last resort between two identical motherboards.

SSD's wouldn't benefit from defragmenting since they aren't mechanical drives.  Defraging moves the "fragments" of your data closer together on the disk in your drive and moves everything closer the the center of the disk.  This prevents the read head on the drive from having to move around as much and speeds up your drive.  Since SSD's are flash memory it doesn't matter where your data is.

I've had these questions at the back of my mind, just never bothered getting around to googling it...

1. What does RMA stand for?

2. How does product keys/verification work?

3. What does BLCK stand for?

4. Why are some mics called "boom" mics?

Boom mics are microphones on the end of a pole I'd imagine, BCLK is BaseClock, RMA I can't remember and how keys work I'm not that sure either.

2. How does product keys/verification work?

Usually, there's probably a database of valid keys; yours is checked against that and marked as "in-use" once you register it. De-activating is the opposite, if a particular product allows it. Least, that's how I'd do it.

Boom mics are mics that are mounted to a Headset, and they oscilate by a screw/mounting.Ususally they are adjustable in height/orizontally, but not by length.

A lot of questions on here arent but it doesnt much matter i guess

why do people still use macs when windows can do everything a mac can do and more at a cheaper Price?

Because mac is a popular choice for music production and video editing. and mac has really good build quality.

I know that people use the term ODD to indicate their optical drive, but what does it stand for?

Optical Disc Drive? -shrug-

e: was guessing, apparently that's right. A bit like Hard Disk Drive.

Though it does sound odd (I see what you did there.), it makes sense.

The thing that reads the disk is an optical beam... basically. Just like how there are two types of mouses, optical and laser.

Just sayin', mouses is correct as MOUSE stands for Manually Operated User Selection Equipment, or something equivalent. So mice doesn't make sense.

The more ya know...

Edit: Right, question...

How do you select your custom title on here? I want to see if I can since I'm stuck at Junior Member and have 525 posts.

I think those who were carried over from vB5 are not part of the rank progression tree.  I do not manage the forum though so I don't know if there is a fix planned for that.  In the meantime I can give you a custom one if you want though (PM me).
