FX-6300 or Intel i3 4150?

Again, this is between a locked i3, and an FX on an mATX board. If you'd use your head, you'd realize that the overclocking factor doesn't exist.

Perhaps OP could grow balls and It still performs well without the need of overclocking.

By next Christmas there will already be Skylake which will require a new mobo anyways

But don't u think broadwell will still be in the market?

Just do us a favor and leave already....

Yeah but honestly Skylake is a big platform change, and buying Broadwell then would be like buying Ivy Bridge now.

would getting a cheap ATX case be an option? that would REALLY open up options for motherboards for both AM3+ and 1150 sockets

AM3+ yeah, but H97 is H97 whether it's mATX or ATX. AM3+ just doesn't have much mATX support.

That's dependent on the chipset, not the CPU. This mATX AM3+ mobo has SATA III

i know, i did see a few sata III am3+ mobos, but they looked kinda 'meh' quality... especially that 4pin cpu power connector.

Yeah, but they're all 4+1 power phase which is perfectly fine for FX at stock speeds. It's overclocking when these things start to draw a lot of power.

true... the 4150 would be a better option for motherboard selection... but its a wheezy little old dual core... perhaps i'm being a bit of an AMD fanboy here, but i'm pretty sure the 6300 would be a better bet for gaming.

I guess.. and i know the OP said he didnt wanna OC, so maybe a mATX am3+ isnt a 'terrible' option, but i just think it would be nice for the OP to atleast have the option to overclock in the future. (i'm a bit of an overclocking-addict)

If you can afford an i3+a 'very good' h97 board, then you should consider an i5-4460 and an h81 board.

I'd still strongly reccomend going with the 6300, even with a 4pin power plug. you wont be able to OC much, but a stock 6300 will stick beat the i3 in my book...

as for the idea of saving up for an i5, i'd say save that money and put it towards a new atx case and better AM3+ mobo. it'll probably be cheaper to do that than buy the i5 anyway..

Honestly the FX would, since games are starting to use more cores that are given to them. 6 AMD cores, although individually weaker, IMO are better then 2 Intel cores with HT

Skylake will be quite a big difference. It's Broadwell that is a pretty small facelift.

If you can afford an i3+a 'very good' h97 board, then you should consider an i5-4460 and an h81 board.

If you read you'll note that OP wants to upgrade next christmas to the newer platforms like Broadwell, which aren't supported by H81.

H81 != future upgradability to Broadwell

While games are starting to use more cores, there is still a single central powerful core required, plus not all games are heavily threaded.

Broadwell is only going to be a gpu improvement, the actual cpu improvement will be <3%

True, but seeing as FC4 isn't supported on dual cores (a trend which we sadly might start seeing more of), the 6300 would be more future-proof IMO

Except an i3 can be upgraded to an i7, whereas a 6300 can be upgraded to only an 8350, which isn't nearly as big of a jump.
