FX-6300 or Intel i3 4150?

Except an i3 can be upgraded to an i7, whereas a 6300 can be upgraded to only an 8350, which isn't nearly as big of a jump.

That can be put in consederation too..

Did you even read the thread... I suggested next christmas OP upgrades to Skylake anyways, so that the upgradability what he gets now really doesn't have to matter.

Yes, I did, and I don't really see a reason to bother upgrading to Skylake, thats like telling someone with an Ivy bridge cpu to upgrade to Broadwell, which is plain silly since Ivy -- hell Sandy even -- isn't going to hold back 99% of systems. Even a Nehalem i7 can keep up in gaming today.

You can't just say CPU. Upgrading from an Ivy i3 to a Haswell i5/i7? Yes, that makes plenty sense.

Not when you consider you also need to replace the motherboard as well. Upgrading to an ivy i5/i7 would make more sense as you wouldnt have to replace the motherboard for a small performance gain.

with the FX6300, he woulnt need to upgrad the CPU for a good long while compared to the i3. i'm still running ye-olde i5 2500k (overclocked at 4.7) and its still going strong. those extra cores on the 6300 would really help IMO.

besides, when the time comes that he DOES need to upgrade the 6300 (in 3, maybe even 4 years with a good overclock), there'll be better platforms released by then anyway

basically, what i'm saying is the extra cores AND the potential to OC with the FX6300 will help it perform well for a good long time

But if he got an H81 board, he couldn't upgrade to Broadwell, which is what's going to be on the shelves next Christmas.

Yes, he can just upgrade to a Haswell i7, which will have virtually the same performance.

But, the reason to go with an h81 board would be to squeeze in an i5 thereby reducing the need to upgrade for years.

That is true, but since I might be upgrading it next year, I can have an i3, and in a year or so upgrade to an i5 broadwell, and I won't have to spende money on a new mobo, and I will be future proof

To sum it up --> 6300 sligthly better for new games due to more cores, but due to the module system it's more like 3 cores and 3 threads. Also better for rendering. Can OC but good mobo and cpu cooler required. Has mostly old motherboard with worse onboard features like audio codec, expansion and is still on pcie 2.0.

tends to have more serious fps drops than intel cpus.

i3 will perform better in most single to quad threaded games like LoL and cs go. Has a potential upgrade path to i5 and i7s. Skylake is not as big as you think, more like sandy to ivy (sata 4? pcie 4?).

Newer expansion features like m.2, satae and pcie 3.0 (not new, but amd doesn't support it.

Conclusion= best cpu for the NEWEST titles and only the newest titles would be the 6300.

An overall good gaming performance in every game, while not being as good as a 6300 in the new 6 core optimized games, still keeps up pretty well. Also, more matx and new mobo features.

i think you should forget about the FX all togheter as this option gives you no upgrade path...the FX are old technology and even a core i3 plays games better..i think you should beg your mom and perhaps maybe eat kraft dinner all week to afford a core i5-4460 and an H97 motherboard.

the i5 is only a couple big mac's more when you think of it this way and it will last you a while...it's worth it...and for the FX if you consider the cpu cooler for the thing and a more expensive motherboard and added cost on power bills you end up paying the same in the end for a lesser product.
