Shit i didn't imagine anything as drastic, just a bunch of small worms chewing through buildings and foundations!

Relax. That neural map is only based on our current understanding of how neurons work. Probably doesn't even include the neural plasticity that we know these things exhibit but not what triggers it etc. Not to mention a worm has only about 300 neurons, as compared to about 20 billion for the average human. It'll be a long time before AI catches up to humans if we decide to go that route. Also, until such phenomenons as neural plasticity, and short-and long-term potentiation, which are yet to be fully understood and more importantly accurately replicated in software, all you'll end up with if you do this is a brain that can do reflexes and react to certain impulses, but probably can't make logical decisions and certainly can't learn new behaviour. And when it is understood and replicated, but not all too accurately, I predict such AIs will be even more susceptible to such disorders as epilepsy and depression than the real ones are.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

I'm still waiting for "mouse simulator" where someone connects a mouse directly to VR through the mouse's brain. (That's actually one of the first things what I want to achieve when (if) I take neuroscience)

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

So, apparently scientists are getting really friggin bored these days, and decided to put a simulation of a worm's mind into a robot body.

Beneath the skin of a simple worm with transparent skin, there are 302 neurons that have been mapped meticulously by researchers in what is known as a connectome. This tiny, one millimeter-long worm has been studied in laboratories around the world, and now it's nervous system has been transplanted into the body of a Lego Mindstorms EV3 robot. The worm they used is Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans).

 

 

Apparently, the robot acts a lot like C. elegans: Stimulation of its nose made it stop moving, while touching a food sensor made it move forward. “What we found is that rather than just random, crazy movements by the robot, it actually responded to its environment in the same manner as the biological worm,” said Timothy Busbice, one of the founders of the OpenWorm project, to Gizmodo.

 

 

The simulation is not perfect quite yet. According to the Smithsonian, the program has some simplifications on the thresholds needed to trigger the so-called neuron firing. For more detailed information on the robotic worm, read the article written by Busbice for Radar. 

 

 

So this is pretty weird. Kind of cool considering that it's a tiny first step towards truly understanding a human mind. And I for one, welcome our new robot overlords.

im more baffled they managed to do it with a mindstorm, last i used them (NXT) you could barely run simple C code on them

If it has logic and means of reasoning for its own logic. Being "conscience" of something means to be aware of. Therefore, if the said simulation is aware of its surroundings, it's existence, and logic, then I would say it has a consciousness.
