If that memory bus is accurate that means AMD must have hit some sort of breakthrough. Going from a 192 bit bus to 256, to 512, straight to 4096 is kind of crazy. They must have found a way to manufacturer these much cheaper as well since the wider bus in the past has added a lot of cost to production.

If they're going straight to 4096, do you think that this could give them a massive edge over NVIDIA?

Sig under construction.

IF they price it right, IF the card doesnt turn into a owen, IF NVidia doesnt respond with GM200, IF they put dubstep in their ads... than yes maybe it would.

We know nothing abotu frequencies though if I recall correctly, we might see very low frequencies as a result of the absurd bandwitdh effectifely making it not the huge improvement we might think

Come on AMD!!! I have very high hopes for the 390X. But the rumours are strong with this one.

I don't know enough about transistor theory and how these things even work architecturally to comfortably tell you yes or no. But if bandwidth is actually a bottleneck in performance of cards in higher res (which I imagine it is) then yes it should give them an edge. However if AMD is smart they are going to release cards that only barely outperform the Nvidia cards instead of going out of the gate with everything they have.

Well no matter what it won't be a huge improvement. At absolute maximum it will outperform Nvidia by 2-4% because even if they have a card that outperforms it by 10-20% they won't release it until next generation.

I'm not sure about that, nvidia still holds the majority of the marketshare afaik so technically amd still has good reason to step up their game big time. I was just saying that the memory specifically will probably just be a step in a different direction that usual but that this solution will only yeald significantly more performance in the future (a bit like ddr4 compared  to ddr3).

Nothing more than rumors at this point. @LinusTech. Are you going to give your opinion on this rumor on the show tomorrow?

Yes it's the HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) as mentioned in the article.  Nvidia is nowhere near them in this, 2016 will be the earliest they catch up...and maybe even 2017.

is this how to summon the mighty linus?

I've seen other people do it. I have no idea if it works or not. Thought I'd give it a shot.
