Nvidia to reveal GeForce GTX 970/980 with 8GB of memory in November or December

Nvidia Corp. and its partners plan to release graphics cards based on the company’s latest GM204 graphics processing unit with 8GB of onboard memory either in November or December. The new solutions are expected to boost demand for GeForce GTX 900-series graphics adapters.

Exactly. My point is, Nvidia just one upped AMD. AMD has yet to release new cards. Instead they remade their cards with 8gb VRAM. Now Nvidia simply did it on their next gen cards. So as I said, your move AMD.

The bus would never be able to utilize the extra VRAM for gaming. In editing or CAD work it'll be great, but gamers will see marginal performance increases at best.

I never expected Nvidia to launch a 256-bit flagship card after the R9 series launched, but they still did.

 

Also, you actually need the physical space to implement 512 parallel lines for the bus. I don't think GM204 is physically big enough.

you are misinformed. maxwell with its new architecture does not need a wide bus to access ram, since it has so much L2 that it has to access it fewer times, and can take more time, loading stuff. which all means even a narrow bus can deliver almost unimaginable memory amounts no problem

Nvidia did the same as AMD. How is that one upping them?

They already have their new line of cards out. It seems to me, AMD pulled that to keep a hold in the market until they release their next cards. Seeing as 970s were flying off the shelf, AMD needed to keep up in the market somehow. However, Nvidia swept in making the same move on their "new" cards, effectively removing any market foothold AMD held from their move.

ummm... maybe the fact that you have 4 gigabytes on a 256bit bus? also, there can not be any real life numbers, when cards are released. but if you knew anything in depth about architectures, you would realise that the more cache you have, the easier it is, to utilise ram. (for example, a cpu has up to 64GB of ram (consumer) and yet, it has no problems using it all, even over a 64/32bit bus).
