Controlling fan speed by radiator temp?

I control my fans via Asus AI Suite 3, nice and quiet when idle, and then during game load I manually have to load a higher RPM fan profile, and because my GPU is on a Kuhler 620 with a SP120 quiet edition I totally messed up yesterday. I forgot to turn the fans up, and my GTX 470 and all of its room heating abilities got up to 104c for a bit and seems to have messed up my Kuhler 620 (makes pretty horrible sounds, probably toasted a bearing or warped the impeller ).

 

So, that being said, I want to try and fix the for the future. I have a Z87 Gryphon which has the ability to throw some custom placed thermal probes on. I can't use the standard mobo ones as they don't really report anything of any value in the GPU department. What I am thinking, since I don't know of a better way that isn't ugly, maybe I could put a thermister on the backside (mobo tray side) of my GPU radiator so you can't see it. I am just not sure if the heat of the rad will be enough of an indication to turn fans up. I know the heat in the rad will lag behind the GPU core, but it shouldn't lag THAT badly is my assumption. And when it did get to a toasty 104, the rad sure was hot as hell, so was the frikin thumb screw on my 350d side panel! So this easily proves the rad will get warm, I am just not sure if the side of the rad will get warm enough to run fan profiles off of.

 

Has anyone tried this, or have a all together better idea?

 

If this works, I would probably do the same with the CPU, or a conjunction of the mobo's cpu temp readout and a thermister on the radiator (just to reduce fan spikes since 4770k's can just randomly hit 50+c for a split second which obviously has 0 effect on water temp thus not requiring fan RPM increase.

Why not just probe the GPU? I mean seems easier. The probe will have reading issues likely with the fan breeze moving over it?

The probe would go on the outside edge closest to the mobo tray. So it shouldn't really get much air over it (plus I would tape it down so air won't flow over it).

Issue with probing the gpu itself... How would I. The r9 290 I am getting has a back plate, but I don't want to put the probe on top as it will look horrible. Lol. Possibly could tape it to the bottom, but the back plate also doesn't at all reflect the core temperature as most of the heat is being drawn away through the water loop.

I see. Well that could work. 

 

To install a temp probe on a cpu or gpu, you casically want to get it as close as possible to the die under the heatsink, but not actaully on it. DOn't crush it, they are  senssitive. 

Something like this picture, though you may or may not need any kind of adhesive 

Idea is to get it under the heatsink, next to the chip, but not on it, and in an area where there's a gap. I've never really used these much, I've use one touching the block of an AIO I had, and it was pretty close. 

 

Placing it on the side of the radiator or something else would do the jop you want though, long as you do a test run to see how hot the probe gets when the radiator is too hot. (Make it hot on purpose)

Yea. I would for sure test it first. Lol. But maybe, there might be a chance depending how low profile the Asus probes are that I can fit it between the chip and the water block. Or assume the block is slightly larger than the chip just touching the block. I'll try that first for sure. If not I guess the radiator idea will be tested.

Yah. I mean if not I think the idea of putting it on the shroud of the radiator would work if it really gets that hot.

When the gpu got up to 104 the rad was HOT, problem is I was in panic mode and am not sure how long the gpu was actually at 104 to transmit that heat through the radiator sidewall.

You can't do any kind of software monitoring with the GPU temp and use that to controll the fans through pwm?

The only way I know to get a gpu readout is through riva tuner or MSI afterburner/EVGA precision. My motherboard utility doesn't grab it. And only way I know to control my fans is with the Asus mobo utility. Lol.

You COULD, head me out, cause this is a terrible thing I did, COULD use the pwm header on your gpu to control the fans. That requires destroying the fan connector.

actually the newer versions of speedfan can do thatt, but it's not easy.

Google "gpu temp case fans" to look at people trying to control their case fan speed based on gpu temperature, same thing basically.

Also, I can't use pwm because the STUPID mobo will only control pwm or dc voltage. Not both. Some of my fans are not pwm so it just frikin doesn't work right. I have to put the mobo in like direct dc only control. But. If there is a program to handle all this, it should still work. Not like dc is weird. Pwm is just better.

Any idea on a good 120 rad? Looks like xspc has a decent offering for a good price. But rad also isn't something to skimp on since it will last me basically forever. Should get a quality unit because price over time will yield great returns (I plan to keep my rads till I stop water cooling things...). Maybe alpha cool instead?

Also, anyone know if at idle (CPU under clocks and undervolts according to intel spec as it's OCed with adaptive voltage, and gpu fallows it's idle strategy too) would be able to turn off 2 of the 120's and leave only the single 120 fan on at about 650 rpm? Or will hear build faster than can be dissipated?

I know they say a 120 rad can do 300 watts of dissipation at 800 rpm I think I read, and theoretically an idle CPU and gpu should put out a lot less. Maybe that 300 dissipation isn't correct and I am remembering incorrectly.

Alpha cool and XSPC make great radiators. Alpha cool seems to make a few more sizes than XSPC though.

I am saying a undervolted and underclocked cpu AND gpu, at idle, on 120. I want the 240 rad fans to be off at idle if possible, but this probably isn't going to happen.

 

I will have 3x120 total, between a dual and a single 120 rad's. Since the dual is at the top of my case and produces the most amount of noise to my ear, I want them to be off at idle, or at least VERY low RPM. I guess  will experiment once I get it all set up. I have two SP120 quiets and 2 SP120 high performance, and the high performance only go down to about 630 rpm, which is honestly pretty quiet. Maybe I will put the quiet ones on the top and have them spin at like 400 rpm (basically inaudible) and put a high performance on the single 120 in the back.

Ahh sorry I misunderstood.

 

I dont know if you will be able to get the stop completely, but you should be able to get them to spin at inaudible speeds.

 

What case are you using? I am just curious.

As of now, I just got a r9 290 (actually having a few strange driver issues with it and my intel HD graphics (when it comes out of sleep the intel driver crashes and I loose my third monitor , reformat is in my future...) and I am planning to water block it with my Cooler Master 240l being the main part, adding a 120 rad and the gpu block.
