Wind Force GTX 680 (buy or nahhhh?)

Go to solution Solved by VG Docs,

Used it's not a very good deal.

You can get an r9 280 (Similar performance) brand new for $190.

If you can though, save up as much as possible for a 970. You can however get a GTX 770 for quite a good price if ~$330 isn't possible.

My friend has a Gigabyte GTX 680 Wind Force that he's been using for about a year and he's gonna buy a 980. He offered to sell me the 680 for $200-ish. I currently have a Asus Radeon 7770 and I was gonna wait for either a 300 series card from AMD, a GTX 960 or something like that. Although I would rather get a Nvidia card. He's buying his new card in a month or something, so hopefully Nvidia and/or AMD shows off something by then. I play on a single 1080p monitor so I don't do any crazy triple monitor 4k or anything. I am 13 so as you can imagine the parts I buy kinda have to last me a while. I would like but don't NEED Nvidia's VXGI or MFAA or even Physx or CUDA, But I would like them. I kinda hate AMD's raptor thing so I would really prefer G-force experience. Actually now that I think about it I would much rather get a Nvidia card unless AMD comes out with some 980 killer for $200. Anyway should I get the 680 from him for $200-ish or no? P.S My budget is $100-$250. P.P.S Maxwell's super power efficiency thing isn't that important to me either. Many thanks!

You want to buy a used (!) 680 for 200$ and you expect a 980 killer for 200$? That's not how it works..... I don't think that a used 680 is necessarily worth 200 bucks, you could get a significant bump in performance by spending 100 bucks more. If you are limited to 200$ max then it's not a horrible deal.

Well, I also sold my 770 (which basically is a 680) for 240€ 2 months ago. That was before the 900 series was available though.

I'm not saying that I expect AMD to do that. I was just exaggerating. (Sounds better than saying "AMD makes a 980 for $513!")

The 970 seems to be such a good deal, it has a slightly slower clock speed than a 980 but is easily overclockable to the equvilant, it just seems like a better choice from a cost stand point in my opinion

Take it! I'm using GTX 780 for my personal rig and 2 months ago i bought GTX 680 for my another rig and then.. To be honest i was so freaking surprised of it's performance. The difference between 680 and 780 on real life gaming is not that much. The only different on 780 is u can set the AA a bit higher and the rest is quite the same as long as u're using 1080p display. FYI mine is 1920x1200 (a bit higher than full HD) but the 680 still glorious!

My advice is..

TAKE IT!
