Man treated for internet addiction 'caused by Google Glass'

Shaade

(My first news post, apologies if it's a repost or wrong topic or just crappy /etc. =P)

"Scientists have treated a man for internet addiction disorder allegedly brought on by overuse of Google Glass in what is believed to be the first case of its kind.

The man had been using the technology for around 18 hours a day – removing it only to sleep and wash – and complained of feeling irritable and argumentative without the device.

In the two months since he bought the device, he claimed he had also begun experiencing his dreams as if viewed through the device’s small grey window, the Guardian reported."

[Not sure if this classifies as tech news or not, but I thought it would be an interesting discussion at least.]

I'm no expert on the subject and what exactly qualifies something as an 'addiction' or something else entirely, but I certainly feel as though I personally am addicted to the interwebs. Checking my favourite sites is the first and last thing I do everyday, as well as something I do throughout the day. It's where I get the majority of my entertainment, with movies, games, and the likes, where I go for news and alot of my shopping for non-food-stuffs, where I connect with alot of friends and like-minded people, and the list goes on. When my connection goes down for a few hours or, heaven forbid, an entire day - it feels like the end of the world, and it certainly shows in my behaviour. I'm pretty sure i'm not alone in this though..........right? =P So I can definitely understand this person's situation to some degree.

But what do you think of the whole 'Internet Addiction' thing, and this case of it supposedly being caused by Google Glass?

For fucksake. Addiction can be caused by too much of one thing, this guy had too much of the internet thus got addicted, just like you can get addicted to alcohol, Nicotine etc. by having too much of it. It's the person's choice to get addicted.

I think internet (I wouldn't call it addiction) dependence is a real thing but I'm doubting that wearing GG for long periods brings it on. This seems like an extreme, one off thing to me.

I think the main take away from this is humans are addiction prone by nature. The more overstimulant something is more likely it will cause addiction. Which means we are pretty much going to go extinct when Holodecks are invented.

The stone cannot know why the chisel cleaves it; the iron cannot know why the fire scorches it. When thy life is cleft and scorched, when death and despair leap at thee, beat not thy breast and curse thy evil fate, but thank the Builder for the trials that shape thee.

I'm not a doctor, but I definitely believe there is a subconscious need to be "plugged in" these days. I would argue that you can become addicted to anything that produces positive feedback, but again, I'm not a doctor.

The dream thing isn't so strange. My friends and I used to play chess on a regular basis. I would spent large amounts of time trying to figure out how to beat them. Eventually I began dreaming about chess pieces. I really don't think that makes me a crazy person. Just means that I devoted a large portion of my conscious (and subconscious) mind to a particular thing.

We should be careful to state causation just yet. Did someone with a porn site membership get addicted because of his membership, or did they get the porn site membership as a result of their porn addiction?

Addiction nah...

But Anime is so much better.

I'm not addicted to the net, the only site I really check is LTT. If my net goes down, I go play Skyrim or borderlands. Not a big deal.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)
