odd choice of chip!

high fsb and low multi

i just got some random ones that were cheap. this one was £2.95. this is actually quite interesting so far. i've spent ages tweaking voltages to get it nearer 3ghz and it turned out my ram was too slow

So is there a way to overclock an E4500 on G41?

sure.

check the bios, if there's no options tell me if it's an AMI (american megatrends) bios and ill help you out.

It's AMI. There aren't options though.

Damn, I'd almost kill for that motherboard and RAM, my P5K had to be resurected (I'm glad I kept my older ones, loads of spare components) and it can no longer overclock at all. If that RAM can't overclock to 1066MHz, then maybe I wouldn't bother with it (I've got 4GB of Team group and HyperX).

Hynix ram actually overclocks real well. Got up to 1066MHz. In case you haven't heard of Hynix, it's the OEM RAM stuff.

In that case maybe I would use it. From what I've seen Hynix is one of the better brands for RAM chips.

B) it cost an arm and a leg, but i think it was worth it. just had the ram up to 1132mhz CL6-7-6 18 which isn't too bad, stock is CL5-6-6 18. :) northbridge was on 1.34 or 1.36v and that was stone cold :). i seem to get an voltage fail error if i go higher than 1.6v :( mounting the cooler was interesting with the components and heatsinks so close to the socket.

Very good. I paid 40 bucks for an extra 4GB since just 4GB alone isn't cutting it for my PC, since FuckFox is such a RAM turd.

I definitely know what motherboard to get now, my Xeon starts at 3GHz, 1.2V so I've got a lot more headroom than your E6550, and the same for my Core 2 Duo E8500, I got it to 4.4GHz stable at under 1.4 volts ($25 on ebay, $15 from my local computer repair shop-and they actually guarantee that they weren't overclocked).

I paid $0 for my Team group, and $2 for my HyperX kit. Its always good when you buy something just before it gets thrown out.

that xeon should be fast. i have another 5 cpu's to test, but all of them are fairly slow, the fastest is a pentium dual core@2.93ghz :P. just to get me a bit of practice before i move to some faster c2d's and then quads.

Yeah, pretty much overclock the hell out of what you've got, and see if you can get the older CPUs matching the newer ones in performance.

I gotta get my Q6600 a good overclock with a good board. I guess 680i boards hate Q6600s. 1.3225V seems to be too much.

harry said his 680i board didn't like quad cores. any intel chipset should overclock it ok. the P35 and X38 boards seem to be the sweet spot price to performance wise over here.

they are, but they are expensive a good p35/x38 board is £50-60 a good p45/x48 is more like £80-100

@terrytek send me a download for your bios, you can usually mod the options in, ill sort it in the morning.

and of course, flash at your own risk.

although IIRC nforce boards were pheonix bios- please double check :P

I need to figure out how to use SetFSB to OC my Optiplex 760. It uses Windows 7 Embedded for its BIOS, and as such, no OC options, and I have yet to find a "magic overclocking hidden advanced menu" that will let me screw with frequencies, so software it is. Although I have read about loads of people having great luck with it, so I need to figure out how to do that and I will try to get my Q9300 up to 3Ghz if I ever get around to it.

Find the PLL of your motherboard, usually it's near the top PCIe Slot. It's usually a ICS9 or SLG branded chip.

@terrytek newer is better I guess :)
