So this new Mercedes-Benz ad is pretty weird...

It's an ad for their new Vito van (comparable to a Ford Transit) and how it was 'made...'

And they still cover it in chrome.

What do they know of England, who only England know?

I assume most  americans wouldnt get it because in north america we have shitty trucks like peterbuilt and mack. transportation companies wont invest in the safety of motorists here. (i say that because most companies look for owner/operators... where I live anyways.. and I've never seen one of these on the road here... I think i'd piss myself out of amazement if i did see one)

the main message of the ad (not knowing anything about the vito, and knowing a lot about the safety truck), is that they've taken the features of the truck and put it into a vehicle for you and me.

this is a youtube video from '08 demonstrating a transport truck with features that many european cars (maybe only higher end cars, I don't know) have had since the 80s I believe. I think growing up my best friends grandmother had a giant lincoln or something that kept the car between painted lines on a road.

I don't think even mercedes can afford to put a 3 minute spot on often though!

how are american trucks shit? they haul anything and anything for us. the americans are the best in engineering.

also, i only see the ads for regular cars, not the european trucks.

American trucks are low cost machines. They do not have nearly as many features (safety and comfort) as european trucks (from what I've heard/read... I live in Canada)

They are great for what they are meant to do, but they don't take into consideration other vehicles on the road. They are designed like this for a purpose though. North America has huge fleets of transport trucks on the road all the time, companies can't afford to buy expensive quality trucks, so they have these economical trucks that drivers can afford to buy themselves so they get paid more than if they were just a driver because they are responsible for insurance, the safety inspections, fuel (most get gas cards if its a decent company), maintenance, storage, repairs, etc...

I am sure there are some models that have comparable features to some of the ones across the pond. In business studies in high school, we studied how wal mart keeps most of their inventory on transport trucks, saving them the costs of warehouses to hold it all, and they were basically blamed for gridlock on highways... but the sheer effectiveness of this system could not be beat from a business stand point. could you imagine if every truck they owned (not sure if they use owner operators or not... they probably at least own the trailers) was a safety truck (the trailer on it uses special braking system in the trailer to prevent tipping, so its a mercedes product too...) They would probably prefer the warehouse option.

I just googled walmart logistics case study, and heres an excerpt from a blog:

The company’s hub-and-spoke distribution network utilizes a system of manufacturer storage with customer pickup.  No inventory is stored at Wal-Mart’s distribution centers.  Wal-Mart’s fleet of 6,500 dedicated trucks and over 50,000 trailers (SC Digest’s editorial staff, 2011) are used to pick up goods directly from manufacturers’ warehouses, thus eliminating intermediaries and increasing responsiveness.  The use of trucks raises transportation costs but is justified in terms of reduced inventory.   Merchandise brought in by truck to distribution centers is sorted for delivery to stores within 24 to 48 hours.  However, certain goods, such as automotive and drug products, are delivered directly to stores by suppliers.  Wal-Mart, a pioneer in the logistics technique of cross-docking, also has store-specific orders packed and shipped directly to the store by the manufacturer.

European truck makers have far superior engineering compared to the American ones... My fave hauler is the Volvo FH16 750 :) it's a feat of engineering.
