Buy the 4gb version or wait for 8gb version of the 970?

Jackie Coogan

I want too upgrade my rig and I was wondering witch do you guys recomend: go for 4gb version of wait 8gb version. Till today everone thought 4gb was enough but than Shadow of Mordor comes out and it asks for 6GB of vram too play on utra... and the game dosen´t even look that good... so witch will get me more bang for my buck the 4gb or the 8gb?

You definitely don't need 8gb

For now...

Who said an 8GB version is coming out? Is it confirmed? Shadow of Mordor asking for 6GB is just funny... And there is a warning in game that says "ultra needs 6GB or more VRAM to run" which is even funnier...

It was rumored back In August that the 4GB models would come in September and 8GB models around November-December.

The first part of the rumor turned out to be true. Maybe the second one will also.

Mark my words, 6GB thing will turn out to be BS and if the game ever really becomes unplayable on ultra with say GPUs like 980, 780 Ti then all I will be able to say is the devs did an awful job. Unless it looks amazing, which I highly doubt. There are no such thing as 6GB gaming cards out there yet... Titans are not for gaming people. And yes, I know they can be used for gaming too...  :P

This simply looks like a marketing trick to get people to prefer cards with more VRAM. They did the same thing with Watch_Dogs and many people bought 6GB 780s just to find out the game still looks worse than E3 version lol

EDIT: Holy balls! Look at my post count.

why do you say there are no 6GB cards when there clearly are (though not many)?

Because I like to pretend it doesn't exist, it's so pointless...So you are saying the 6GB in a 780 makes sense? lol Let me see you run Shadow of Mordor with that card on Ultra since it meets the "requirements".

These are just lazy devs going for shitty ports.

i would love a 6gb GTX 780 for myself i play at 1080P and i can't max out texture settings in watchdogs, titanfall and dead rising 3...that sucks.

4GB is good for current games but in the short future it will no longer cut it even for 1080P gaming, OP if you play at higher than 1080P OR if you plan on sticking 2 cards in SLI and playing on them for a long period of time it might be worth it to wait for more VRAM...i cant confirm if there are versions with more VRAM are announced but if there are you should consider it.

They'll look the same anyway and even if you max them out with a single 780 6Gb you won't get past 30/40 fps which makes me puke. If there were a 980 8GB out there imo it'd still be pointless. Big Maxwell though probably will be able to take advantage of the extra VRAM. Only then it'll make sense to buy GPUs with 6/8GB VRAM

Just because there is a pointless 6GB card out there they can't just come up with a stupid requirement like that, but it's their game so they can ask 16GBs or more if they wanted to.

8gb on a 256 bit bus.

What a joke lol

you should be aware that using higher quality textures won't affect GPU processing what so ever...it only show better textures, here's a quick explanation about in-game texture quality and how they affect (they don't) performance:

Sorry but that's a load of BS man. Your post clearly states two different resolutions were used, which increases the required processing power. A single 780 6GB can't run any game that requires at least 4GB VRAM over 30fps. Run Skyrim with high res texture mods on a 6GB card that can't take advantage of it and enjoy 30fps (max)

no, only the texture quality has been changed the resolution is the same therefore they both require about the same processing power, but one looks much better and use A LOT MORE VRAM.

Memory compression on the Maxwell and Tonga Gpu's make 8GB or video ram similar to having 12GB on a 780/290

so... no, don't bother waiting.

By the time a resolution uses that 8GB the 970 will already be weak and obsolete.
