GTX Titan vs GTX 780

ltguy
Go to solution Solved by Glenwing,

Crysis 3 5760x1080, all max settings including full anti-aliasing.  Noting that AA takes up a lot of VRAM.

C3memory.jpg

I purchased my Gtx Titan after the Gtx 780 was released. Most will say i'm crazy but the Geforce GTX 780 1440p performance review pretty much nailed the reason why i did this. Linus said the recurring theme in the benchmarks was how memory bandwidth and memory size were holding back the GTX 680 and 660ti. Most people will say that 3gb of memory is plenty for the GTX 780 but most people probably said that about the Gtx 680 with its 2gb that is now holding it back in 1440p. In a years time we'll be watching benchmark videos showing that the GTX 780 being held back by its 3gb's of memory while the GTX Titan is still doing fine with its  6gb's.

Well I beg to differ. More Vram is an indicator of a sloppy coding job on the game devs part. Look at Metro Last Light and if this game is an indicator than Vram is not an issue in the next long while I mean even @ 1440P Metro does not even use more than 1GB Vram.

Hating ? I am just introducing some knowledge here is all . 780 is a fine GPU albeit how over priced it is and the Vram is a non issue. Vram is overrated is all I am stating and the link I provided above prove my standing is certified.

The extra VRAM may indeed end up being a factor if you keep the card long enough, although today's games rarely need more than 3GB.  As an example, I ran Crysis 3 totally maxed at 1440p the other day and never used more than 2.6GB of video memory.  Now at multi-monitor resolutions you can bet that you'll use more than 3GB if you max settings and AA but with single monitor resolutions its not necessary yet.  Looking forward, the PS4 has 8GB of shared memory between CPU and GPU so hopefully developers will start using more of it going forward and we'll see even better textures that make use of our (Titan owners) massive 6GB frame buffer...

I don't think what the Freeman's saying represents 'hating' of any kind. OP's simply trying to justify his purchase, no need for us for blow sunshine up his wazoo if we don't agree. Also, I subscribe to the theory that nV had intentionally priced the Titan waaay above what it should be (perhaps 800USD?), thus making the GTX 780 look 'cheap' by comparison at 650USD. I will wait for Volcanic Islands, look at the top tier card price, and if I deem it acceptable, I'd prolly grab 2-3 pieces.....

I didn't meant to say you were hating, I was just trying to say that because he already bought the Titan then we should just let him enjoy it even it it's a bad card (not saying it is). I also think it's overpriced.

not really, 6GB vram buffer is great for games like BF3 and Crysis 3 that actual use it, plus it's great for surround

BF3 ? I max that game out no problems with 1GB Vram albeit @ 1680x1050. Crysis 3 runs fine with far less than 6gb Vram. Extra Vram only comes into play at triple monitor resolutions. http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/47608-effect-gpu-memory-surround-stereo-3d-performance.html

like I said, great for multi-monitor, and yes, BF3 nearly always uses 1.8 GB of my 2GB vram on my GTX 680

Well in my opinion that's the purpose of the Titan,to use it to play in multiple displays. If you see it as a card to play on single 1080p monitor, then yeah, it's overpriced as F*CK.

I also agree its overpiced and yes I am using it for triple monitor. I also never thought anyone was hating, just sharing their honest opinion. I just think if your're gonna shell out $650 for the 780 youre much better off waiting  for a non reference version with more memory so your investment will last you longer.

Really? Kindly link me to some articles/reviews that show that these games actually use >3GB VRAM, I'm curious as to what games exceeds the VRAM on my HD7970's.....@, say, 1080P, 1440P and 5760x1200?

I can't trust that source I mean the numbers could be and most likely are skewed in some way. That is not information based on validated and legitimate professional publications those are personal opinions of end users with questionable knowledge and experience.

It's about reputation and professionalism which is what put the pro publications on top . Any Joe can have a good reputation but not every Joe can be unbiased and professional. Hate is a strong word though.

I like to think that when reading all or most of the pro reviewers wright ups on a particular product or software paints a quantified picture on just how exactly that product performs. Some publications are more biased than others and even some are paid shills but at the end of the day when taken with a grain of salt the pros are quantified whereas forum members opinions are more often than not biased because unlike the pro publications they had to make a choice with their wallet.
