that must have been some really dry wood, and coated with a really flamable substance, since the specific power of the sun here is about 1.4 kW/m2. and that bench is hardly 1m2 in area. so its really not that much power.

so we all ran out and he is pouring his coffee on the bench as smoke comes off

If the wood was dry it can start to light the splinters, maybe the sun was reflecting off a building, sometime last year a skyscraper in London melted cars in the street because the sun was reflected onto them.

cool story bro, but i call BS...most of normal wood needs over 160°C to catch aflame by itself so there is no way the bench would catch on fire just from the sun alone.
