There has been a lot of discussion lately over Intel's alleged false claims regarding overclocking with the Devil's Canyon Haswell Refresh. So I thought I'd have a little fun and see how far I could push my old 2600K. I've been running an overclock of 4.4GHz for over two years now, but I know that was a conservative overclock. After some quick testing I was able to bump that up to 4.7GHz, on air with a Corsair A70, with what I feel is a safe VCORE, sub 1.4v. Sadly I could not even get Windows to boot at 4.8GHz without a VCORE above 1.4v. It all makes me wonder what changed to prevent newer Intel chips from overclocking well.

So far with the 4.7GHz I have only run the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool a few times to get temps and a CPU-Z validation. I will update this post after I run some extended stress tests. I know I'm not exactly breaking any records here, but again this was just for fun. I just barely cracked 70c with an ambient room temp of 24.5c.

Update:

At 1.385v the first stress test I ran with the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility crashed after about 15 minutes. Had to bump it up to 1.4v, but just finished a 1 hour stress test just fine. Averaged around 70c, peaked at 75c, not bad for an old air cooler.

That's the max range of the multiplier for the chip, not my settings. Something the newer versions of CPU-Z show I guess.

Sandy Bridge is awesome, I plan to stay with my 2600 non-K for a very long time.

I have a Z68 motherboard as well. With a non-Z68 board the maximum multiplier would be 38, I can push up to a 42 multiplier with mine.

Holy balls?!?! 1.5v on an Ivy Bridge chip? Are you insane?

Sandy bridge master race ^^ as for ivy and haswell, it's mostly due to the fact that they're basically an optimization and shrink of sandy bridge. With smaller transistors and approximately the same architecture, it's no wonder they don't oc as well.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

The heats will also downgrade your performance, on 4GHz will do if you do notice.

I'd only push to 1.5 volts on Sandy and that would not be for a 24/7 use scenario. though I know that a lot of people are running at ~1.488 volts on sandy without problems and have been doing so for quite a few years now.

Come on bro, I OC Pentium 4's to 3.5GHz on 1.8v in my sleep...

And my Sempron, which lived through 4.82GHz and 1.6-1.8v. Good old Sabertooth board.

Still a good OC regardless, I want to see how far I'll be able to push my i5 on the stock cooler.

The architecture has almost nothing to do with it. The changes are largely due to the change in TIM.

When i finally break 25mio points in F@at the end of August i'll probably rape my 2600k to around 5jigahertz too. :D

Need better cooling tho. Under full load for over 5h or so it already goes up to mid 60s. Custom loop incoming in mid 2015. ;)

Edit: that weird tag tho. I meant folding at home of course...
