Need some video card advice on an upgrade path for this setup

JinzoDefiler

Hello, I am a long time watcher of Linuses videos way back before he ever made his personal channel. I kinda figured I should finally pop in and ask for some advice..

Anyhow before you make a recommendation I do have a story that is sorta relevant. I am next month aquiring a rig from my friend that moving overseas free of charge.

The Rig as it sits now is little older but hell of alot better then the one im using right now.

Current rig I use

Dell Optiplex 755

Core2 Quad q6600 2.4ghz

6gig ddr2 tam

AMD 6570 1gb Videocard

2x seagate 2tb hds)

Friends rig I am aquiring

Intel core i7 920

GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R

16gb of Gskill ddr3 ripjaws

Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 1gb  - Weakpoint in which i want to upgrade

Intel 80gb ssd

2x Seagate 2tb hds (which are mine and migrating from my old rig to this one.

I am looking to get a better video card for this. I really only lightly game. Mostly Minecraft, Skyrim, Fallout NV etc etc. My budget is depending on when I can get the card. I can get it in august for my birthday which would give me a 100-150ish USD budget. However if i get it in July Im stuck to 80-100 USD. Im stuck with this budget cause the only income i have is from my monthly disabilty checks. I also apolgize for any spell or grammar mistakes as I am Dyslexic and Dysgraphic.

So the motherboard has support for both SLI and Crossfire so both an AMD or nVidia Build is 100% Possible, I would say for now put the AMD 6570 into the i7 system temporally and see how that runs for you as your not really going to get a good card for your budget.

As said above the R7 260X would be a good option but I'd say save up for the R9 280X as it is one beast of a card (Can run BF3 on Ultra with no lag).

Main Machine:  16 inch MacBook Pro (2021), Apple M1 Pro (10 CPU, 16 GPU Core), 512GB SDD, 16GB RAM

Gaming Machine:  Acer Nitro 5, Core i7 10750H, RTX 3060 (L) 6GB, 1TB SSD (Boot), 2TB SSD (Storage), 32GB DDR4 RAM

Other Tech: iPhone 15 Pro Max, Series 6 Apple Watch (LTE), AirPods Max, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PS3, Xbox 360

Network Gear:  TP Link Gigabit 24 Port Switch, TP-Link Deco M4 Mesh Wi-Fi, M1 MacMini File & Media Server with 8TB of RAID 1 Storage

That's double his budget dude...

If iI were you, I'd wait until your birthday and buy an R7 265, as it outperforms the GTX 750 Ti by a good margin. If not, a GTX 750 is still a good option.

Thats why I say to save up as it will give him better performance now and will last longer in regards to games.

He clearly said he doesn't earn much, by the time he's got $300 the next generation of GPU's will have been released.

The thing is I cant really save that much. The money is coming from my family.  It kind has to be a one shot deal. I am not looking for a top of the line card. Also I want to point out that I said light gaming. I havent really played anything "new" in last year or so. The most graphically intense game I play is Skyrim. My main game I play is Minecraft and I play alot of mods.

Im leaning toward the 750ti namely cause its Nvidia and Linux compatibility. I've had some problems with AMD's driver in the past with Linux. I should of said eariler in the thread i am also looking for Linux Compatibility to.

750ti is a good choice, although you say you play Skyrim and a lot of mods? Do you play that on your current machine because I've read that modded Skyrim brings the best of the gpu's to their knees.

I only use the UI mods in skyrim.  I have installed some skyrim mods before on my current rig..  Though i never ran it on high graphic settings and still got decent 40-50 fps on low/med  I mainly play Minecraft Mods.
