280x vs 760 - Price vs Risk

So my friend is looking to build a new system soon.

He is looking at an Nvidia 760 for his graphics card, but looking through eBay he is seeing all the super cheap 280x's (likely from ex-miners) being unloaded for butt cheap.

A 760 will run him about $200-$250 (depends where he buys, sales/promos). A 280x on eBay, which is a way better card, will run him typically ~$200.

Now obviously a lot of these cards are being unloaded by miners, but is that really all that bad? Wont the cards still perform reasonably well. And a lot of them are still under warranty (or at least according to the listings they are...), so if something went really bad he could get a new one.

I am a pretty Nvidia-favored person, so my advice to him was get the 760. But is the 280x at this price really worth it?

Thanks!

Unless you can get it at 1/2 price of a new 280x, don't go for it.

PhysX is fucking awesome. Stop being jealous:)

I'm not jealous. What I used to be jealous of was Shadowplay, until Intel QuickSync and the AMD GPU thing happened.

does mining really cause that much wear on a card? I mean he is looking at an Asus DCU2 card, so it should be a solid card and have been cooled reasonably well.

No matter how you look at it, the card was really pushed hard for an extended period of time, probably close to 80C, and it ight not have had the cleanest power going through it with the load on the power supply.

No, that's just a pathetic excuse AMD fans spit out because they hate people pointing out the fact that AMD can't compete in terms of features.

not sure what is wrong with amd one thing for sure it is alot cheaper and people say that it gets alot hotter to about 80 degrees well why dont you just add some extra fans onto your case they are cheap like 5-10 bucks and if your worried about noise get a headset...

also amd has the same amount of features if i remember correctly

yes cards that have been mining tend to be useless in 2 years, cards normally have a lifespan of 5 years

No it isn't, only a handful of titles use hardware accelerated GPU PhysX.....not jealous as I do own nVidia cards. It enhances some effects, but I can easily do w/o it.
