Devil's Canyon 4790K goes to 5 GHz on air

thewhitestig

We will start seeing some official results in just a few minutes since the Devil’s Canyon OC event hosted by Intel is going to begin soon. Infact, we already have a verified 5 GHz result of the Core i7-4790K which was maintained at 1.400V from Overclock.net forums user “Dhenzjhen@OCN”. The chip was able to deliver a score of 16285 3D Marks in 3DMark 05 which heavily relies on the CPU performance. From what i’ve heard, this overclock was done on air so we can be looking at some big numbers when LN 2 cooling comes in to action.

I knew it! I was sure that Devil's Canyon is gonna overclock like crazy. I told you guys! My 5Ghz hopes for the Pentiums don't seem that out of touch and optimistic now. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/160817-unlocked-20th-anniversary-pentium-overclocking-potential-haswell-refresh/

I don't want to disappoint anyone but the first review so far is saying the polar opposite, could not even get a stable 4.4GHz overclock on the 4790k

your sempron is on a process node that can survive 1.6V. a 22nm transistor would be erased from the face of the earth at 1.6V :P

Still. If my board didn't have a voltage lock, I probably would have pushed 1.7 or 1.8 throught it, and break the 5GHz barrier.

You weren't (and still aren't) qualified to say that. We have no way of knowing the true average overclocking capability until thousands of people get the CPUs and start pushing them.

Until that time, we should find something else to talk about, like the cool stuff coming out of Computex.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use, and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them. - Galileo Galilei

Can't wait to see Linus do a 4770K vs 4790K..  It will prove once and for all what this CPU is really capable of.

I don't believe that an article could be more terribly written, unless it was done by IGN or CNN.

Seriously, though... anyone who believes that a single engineering sample is a valid point of reference when looking at the overclocking performance of a chip just shouldn't overclock in the first place.

Well some golden 4770K samples are able to push 4.9GHz at 1.26V so that's pretty underwhelming...

first time i overclocked i went 1.37volts or somewhere around that with a core 2 extreme, it broke, ever since then ive not overclocked strongly at all and to be honest ive not run into a point where i need to overclock of i cant overclock with my current cpu much.
