Since we're using thermal paste as the TIM, tightening it down further and further results in continual spreading of the paste that corresponds to how far down you've turned the hardware. So in order to control that spreading, you have to control how far you turn the hardware unless you have some way of sealing that area off to prevent thermal paste from spreading beyond a certain amount. 

true, but if i use somthing to prevent the spread, im introducing somthing that is not realistic for pc building

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My apologies. I assumed that the "more to come" meant that other "myths" would be addressed in this thread. Sorry. I am removing myself from this thread.

Then don't. It's not required to properly test it - just place the cooler down onto the CPU, and turn the hardware clockwise and bring the paste down to the desired thickness to test - this is more realistic since users can be paranoid about tightening the hardware down too far and destroying the component, so they might not tighten it down super far.

 

This is mostly academic, so unrealistic conditions could occur to test a specific condition, but I agree that any test that could affect an actual user should replicate a realistic environment - otherwise it's totally pointless.

i mean.. ppl could actually belive that paste can be so thicc or so much off it that u cant tight the cooler all the way down 😆
