network transfering files between desktop-laptop on home network

Hi, i'm trying to tansfer files like games, savegames, movies etc.
How could i do that the "easy" way? I regulary need to do this.

Set up a shared folder on one machine, connect to it with the other.

Connect both computers to the same network  and share a folder on the computer (and enable writing to that folder so that you can copy and paste files into that folder)

Setting up a synchronized folder would be my choice. Check out syncthing, its free and opensource.

How do i make sure  only my desktop can access the laptop and not everyone on the network?

Add a dollar sign to the end of the folder's share name, and it won't be advertised under Network on other computers. (For example, share the folder "secret" as "secret$".)

 

If you set the permissions so guest access is disabled, you'll need the username and password of an account on the host computer in order to access the share.
