Kioxia retires the iconic Plextor Name in favor of rebranding to SSSTC

Failure 101

Summary

The Plextor lineup of SSDs, which are formerly Lite-On now owned by Kioxia is being rebranded to SSSTC (Solid State Storage Technology Corporation). Kioxia seems to be moving out of the consumer market and towards the Datacenter and enterprise markets.

Quotes

Quote

"Parent company Kioxia has decided to retire the Plextor brand name for solid state drives (SSDs). Instead, it will market products under its Solid State Storage Technology Corporation (SSSTC) brand going forward. The move comes after Kioxia acquired Plextor and its parent company Lite-On's SSD business back in 2019."

"SSSTC and Kioxia will strictly focus SSD sales on the enterprise, data center, and industrial segments rather than the consumer market."

My thoughts

I don't believe this to be good a good rebrand for Kioxia. Nostalgia factor aside, Plextor doesn't  have much brand recongition nowdays. ( I personally don't know what much about Plextor). But it still has alot more brand recongition then the mouthful that is SSSTC.

That's a name I haven't heard in a long time. Plextor were well regarded in the optical drive era. I don't feel the name carries much weight today though so it is not a great loss.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

It's really not going to matter in the enterprise and datacenter market. You buy HPE/Dell/Lenovo etc SSDs and they just happen to be Samsung, Intel, Kioxia etc. It's a big "whatever doesn't matter" to most since you are getting the assurance of buying an official vendor part. Only those that really care about which actual SSD they get look and that's because for them it matters, I need one tailored for XYZ or performs better in X scenario. Not all 'Mixed Use eMLC' SSDs are the same but mostly, nearly always, it doesn't matter.

I had completely forgotten about Plextor, wouldn't have know about the change if not being told about it now.

"legendary" is subjective... i always thought its a cheapo budget brand...

lite-on was awesome though (that's the cd player/writer that can print, right? best thing ever!)

Plextor was always considered as upmarket brand. LiteOn was considered as cheap, though they had really good CDRW and DVDRW drives.
