So why was this section renamed to Whale LAN? I mean a lot of the threads here are about LTX and not as much Whale LAN (although there is a presence of Whale LAN topics on here)

Because LTX is no more. Going Forward they're going to focus on LAN parties instead, and have named it WHALE LAN. Thus the rename from LTX Expo to WHALE LAN.

cancelled indefinitely. Its possible it comes back down the road, but going forward it will be LAN parties they do. @Chase Douglas or @LMGcommunity can confirm if this is correct.

Yup! The plan is to host WHALE LANs going forward so we've changed the name of this section instead of making another and keeping both around when an LTX sub-forum would not have had a use for the time being.

Dammit, I really wish y'all had said something BEFORE this year's LTX. I would have gone out of my way to clear my schedule if I knew it was the last one...Like, I get why the decision was made, but this sucks I was saving up to make it a really awesome summer vacation in the next year or so because the cost of flying was just too much this year to make it a good value otherwise.

I'm sure Chase and the team will make the WHALE LAN parties awesome with cool things when attended in person you wouldn't ever get elsewhere. No reason you couldn't play to attend one in the future.

Let's not forget that the team can simply change their mind and LTX might happen again in a few years.

They didn't sign a binding contract with an otherworldly being saying "LTX will never happen again"
