looking at picking up a AIO over my noctua nh-d15

steftast1c

so as the title says, im looking at getting an AIO over my noctua nh-d15  as randomly when booting up games my fans ramp up for no reason and temps shoot up for no reason, but overall it runs fine, (currently playing honkai star rail and its sitting around 50C) but when playing something a little more demanding like battlefield 2042 it can sit around 70+  ill also take suggestions to just not upgrade if its genuinely pointless but id just like to hear opinions

also i have the 13700k

the AIO im looking at is the Corsair iCUE H150i RGB ELITE

thanks

Try adjusting your fan curve? What CPU are you cooling it with?

I'd rather stick with air due to reliability and less points of failure. If a pump dies, the whole cooler is shot. If the fans die, you can always replace the fans.

personal preference, unless you have a 13900k, don't do a custom loop or aio, I just hate water cooling. But if you're having problems with the temps, i'd try repasting, adjusting fan curve, etc., before upgrading to an AIO.

what is your CPU?

Yeah, I think the nh-d15 is plenty for a 13700k, and you should try repasting and adjusting fan curves. And remember, 70 degrees is not too hot, so if you want to slow down your fans a bit that's fine, but I wouldn't let it get above around 75-80 degrees. And don't overclock.

Edit 2: but if you do get an aio i'd totally recommend that one, it's awesome (afaik)

all good, but yeah i might do a repasting  see if that gives a fix

i'd recommend the X method... I personally hardly have any thermal paste at the moment but I'm not going to fix it because my temps are always under 50 degrees...

That's plenty for a 13700K and you may just have to adjust the fan curves so that they are not that aggressive.

Perfectly fine temp.  As others said, just tweak the fan curve if it's ramping up and down rapidly.

D15 is a 220w cooler, 137K is a 255w part out of the box.. could be why its warm.

The 13700k is a hot CPU. I would recommend getting a contact frame to improve thermal dissipation. Also, undervolt your CPU to help keep the temps lower. The temps you reported are not dangerous but it doesn't hurt to go for better cooling.

When a game loads up, your system should experience a spike, but then calm down, although some games are very resource intensive so you may see spikes. When I play games like CoD MW2, Night Prop or Vampire the Masquerade, my 12700k gets pretty toasty but my U12A does a good job, and I have 10 case fans. 😉 🤯

If after UV and a contact frame you still see 90 C+ temps regularly, you should either get a better air cooler, or move up to an AIO. I would not worry about failure too much as AIOs now are much more reliable and usually last 5-10 years. Air coolers basically almost never fail except for the fans. As long as you monitor your system, you'll notice when something is wrong.

That Corsair is overpriced and noisy and there are several others that are better and cheaper.

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂
