Humane AI Pin yay or nay?

Mark Kaine

i watched the Joe Scott video and was honestly blown away... i also obviously agree with him that smartphones are becoming kinda obsolete... taking the addiction factor not into account... the tech just became boring and there is no innovation...

However AI pin looks like it actually could bring people more together again as you don’t constantly stare at a screen anymore...

but then i watched the ltt video (which i rarely do tbh) and that its a subscription service (surprise!!!) in addition to the 700(?) bucks seems kinda like a deal breaker,  unless that includes cellular data... as you obviously need that too...!

What do you guys think, excited or nah?

ps: for those who don't know what it is

this is the literal definition of humans becoming completely reliant on AI. While this may not be "dumb as hell" as @Arika said, this could have some use cases in the medical field for the elderly if they need help, to keep track of medication or to have real time health monitoring etc.

i mean... maybe not completely but this is inevitable anyways, and i just think this thing is much more convenient than a smartphone, i like that its mostly voice and gesture controlled too. it just feels more modern. As for use case, i dunno... i imagine it would pretty much entirely replace smartphones and consequently PC's...

Im on the fence when it comes to AI as a whole. It could do a lot of positive change in the world. But it could also be our destruction. I think we are dealing with forces in which we dont quite understand the consequences of.

i think "AI" is just a fad, like VR or the Wii, or crypto... but maybe its just how we interact with computers in the future? that's honestly how i see this... of course im also skeptical because this always seems to be connected to some remote / alien server, i think it would be better this stuff would be mostly local... but i still think this device makes sense... i don't really see it as a "chatGPT" thing and more like we could interact with the world in the future... similar to how i see AR being used (VR is a dead end and so is smartphones..... everyone constantly staring at a tiny bright screen is just horrible)

But also i find the answers so far interesting,  mostly skeptical,  unenthusiastic...

as joey said, that's how the smartphone was seen too.... i thought it's the ugliest and dumbest thing ever and very much preferred my Samsung "slider" phone, which also had a better camera tbh.

anyhow,  its going to be hard to convince people,  it really has to work well out of the gate basically, otherwise people will lose interest quickly i suppose.

i will, as soon i got my hands on this new fangled Trekkie thing, tyvm.

and yes, they do, they're boring , overpriced, and make people addicted... they aren't needed, its just a fad.

They reached their peak, there's nothing new manufacturers can do outside of "battery life"... people are already getting bored of it, you can only play so much "flappy birds" lol... 🙃

yes, and what has that to do with the subject?

Imagine this hypothetical scenario:

So, you're in a subway full of people,  everyone around you has an "AI Pin" or similar device,  but you just have a smartphone, that you must hold in your hand constantly to use it, while everyone else basically gets the same functionality but *hands free* without having to hold anything...

I could see a "future" where this might succeed. But we aren't there yet.

This thing is basically just Bing Chat with a Camera, Microphone and a mini laser projector built-in.

A phone can do SO much more than this.

A projector in daylight would need to be real powerful to even be decently visible.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB / RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus / NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 / PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Win 10 Pro

This is what im thinking,  hence i said this product must work well out of the gate, if it doesn't then it will meet the same fate as VR... niche forever, and probably worse because it factually doesn't have as much functionality than a VR headset (as limited that may also is)

yeah, as per above,  if this thing sucks, dude wasted basically 20 years of his life, i just hope he's smarter than that? i gotta say, my impression is, he is smart and has an endgame,  its a risk yes, and it depends on how good, useful and convincing this product actually is. It doesn't have to be perfect,  but it has to be at least good.

It all hinges on that imo... masses don't have a will, they will do what the ads and influencers tell them, but for that, it has to be actually functional and have value.

anyways,  the idea and concept is intriguing, yes.

It looks pretty dump But what really sealed it for me was in the video when it gets the eclipse info wrong, and the nutritional information about the nuts wrong.

I'm skeptical that it would be good even if it worked, but a little phone on my shirt that constantly lies isn't really a must have for me.

HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW, HONESTLY?

I feel nothing, really - as I have earbuds in and am listening to whatever I want. If someone call me I can talk with them. If someone send a text, phone can read it to me.

And I will respond whenever I deem appropriate - not instantaneous, phone is not a leash.

That is the "use model" I use - so pinning something to me that can not only hear everything (as smartphones already can) but have unobstructed camera is a big "no no" as it does not make anything I do better.

Just stop getting addicted to using technology for EVERY DAMN THING, and maybe you will realize that you do not really need gimmicks like this.

AI isnt a fad. Its being used in industry and defense. AI will take peoples jobs one day. Now will every day people use AI? I cant say. Its kinda like when I was young we all had smart phones but the old folks refused. The smart phone was not a Fad, it just that certain groups of people didn't see a need at the time or an appeal. In my opinion this pin is kinda like a smart watch, many of them have cellular data and pretty much can take the place of your phone. Some people will like that aspect while others wont. Based on how I use my phone I rather stare at a screen, but again thats just me.

Personally Im waiting for when either we have a device that just communicates directly to our brains or we have an implant that handles all of this. Ghost in the Shell style.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I feel horrified and annoyed to the hell.

Not that I have just a smartphone that I keep on my ear to talk to someone but the god damn awful narcissistic pieces of shits who cannot hold their phones on their ears neither use headsets and talk with the speakers at 100% volume trying to compete with each other to hear and to be heard. No matter even if the thing on your chest has the HAL 9000 build into it, it cannot block your ears from the person next to you and it ends up into a shouting contest and all because people cannot use their devices so anyone else doesn't need to suffer from it.

i meant current AI, like chatGPT, etc, its really just a buzzword people slap on everything now.

due to the mostly negative answers in this thread, i came to think calling this device "AI" pin is a mistake... people have certain expectations (however unreasonable perhaps)  with that... i just don't think AI is or should be a focus with this device... it should be more about usability and indeed use case, which in my impression is really to get people off of doing what they're currently doing "consume consume consume" and start interacting more with other people instead... this is the advantage of such a device imo, and should be emphasized more probably.

Maybe im misunderstanding it, but the presentation and what Joe said in his video implied this very much.

you aren't going to play "flappy birds" on this device...

ok, this was obviously not where i was going with that question  😂 but i also don't think this would happen,  i guess most people would use a headset.

Tbh its annoying if someone talks loudly during a phone call in public already,  and this device would do nothing to change that really.  its just annoying people being annoying. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I hope you're paraphrasing this badly because as stated it's ridiculous. There are lots of technologies where no innovation has occurred for a long time which are nevertheless far from obsolete.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

none of this has anything to do with becoming obsolete...

But since you're on the topic of outrageous claims:

You think smartphones are bad now? all i can think of with this stupid pin is the movie "her". if this becomes wide spread, people will start using it like they use chatGPT and chatbots now but in a much more "open" way (since it''s main purpose to to interact with LLMs). this will destroy people's abilities to speak to other humans and having an AI girlfriend/boyfriend or wife/husband, might actually become common enough to doom our species.

i already said they aren't obsolete due the addiction factor,  but as a tech they have peaked and that's why I think will be obsolete soon... for sure will take a few years.  but from an innovation standpoint they already are.

again, the irony isn't lost on me, when the idea of this device is doing the opposite lol... maybe it fails at what it tries to do, but that isn't the concept behind the idea lol.
