Best PC racing game in the history? Considering the time profile.

Tan3l6

To me it seemed Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed, the hardware it required was really low at the time. Second place Colin McRae rally 2. Stunts being the 3rd.

Are newer titles better, considering the age and hardware requirements?

For Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed I mean 3d accelerated, not software acceleration.

Stunts is really great, my 3rd, but the graphics are too outdated for me.
I wish there were at least 16-bit colors.

I still have physical copies of most of the early NFS games, but I have the fondest memories and spent the most time in the first one (special edition).

I played SODA Off road racing a bunch too.

I know these days I play Assetto Corsa a little, but not like I remember playing those.

Never heard of it before. Probably because 90-s were not the time of the Internet at least in here. Only heard of games through friends myself.

  1. iRacing - to this day, it provides one of the best online gaming experiences that money can buy and has been doing so since 2008.
  2. Assetto Corsa - one of the best deals in sim racing with an outstanding modding community.
  3. Richard Burns Rally - GOAT rally game. Incredible game for the time and still holds up today.

This one always reminds me of one of my favorite arcades as a kid, hard drivin. I think I enjoyed it so much as it was one of the only car games I could find around me that had a working clutch pedal.

Viper racing on PC I played quite a bit too as in incorporated a working clutch. I had another one too, but I can't think of what it was at the moment.

I'd say that one was pretty niche, but it's built in track creator was what really made it shine for me. You could create whatever you wanted.

I need to pick up Bounty Drag Racing on Steam, see how it compares to HotRod's (the magazine) Burnout Drag Racing. That was a great game as well.

Blur.

was blur on pc?

tbh, i played the beta on ps3 and it was SO much fun, but something changed in the release version, and i just found it boring,  even though the concept was still great obviously.

i think they just added too much fluff compared to the beta, but I'm sure i remember that right lol...

happens a lot to me that i love the beta and then kinda hate the release because they changed too much and it doesn't feel the same. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This reminded me of Tommi Mäkinen Rally (aka International Rally Championships) which along with Stunts and Death Rally are among the first racing games I've played.

From the older games, Need for Speed 2 and original Colin McRae Rally were the ones I've played most. From bit newer, FöatOut: UG takes it was over Need for Speed Shift and Dirt 3.

Stunts was awesome, definitely up there for me.

I also spend a lot of time on Ironman (Offroad Racing) as a kid. Could never finish the damn game though, was a bug in 1 of the tracks that made it randomly not count a lap and put me in last place... since i had to win the race in order to continue and eventually forgot to check if it counted the lap i always eventually failed there :(. Still fun though, i kept trying.

I also loved playing the original Death Rally. Was to short but still awesome.

Spend stupid amounts of time on Need for Speed 3. Endlessly dodging the cops on the same track just never got old. Also had 4.1 audio in those days so hearing the cops disappear behind me was what it was all about.

I just wish Gran Turismo would be released on PC 😞

For me it's Need For Speed: High Stake (NFS 4). Best choice of cars, perfect middle ground between simulation and arcade, with proper damage system, police chases, 2 people playing on 1 computer. The hundreds of hours me and my sister spent on it chasing each other or catching the other racers... And last but not least - THE BEST soundtrack of all NFS titles, maybe even all racing games in the history. The moment i hear these songs and i am 12 again, saving money for the Ferrari F50....

None of the racing games after captured quite the same level of magic as this game did.
