Motherboard DDR type

Hi, I'm wondering is it worth it, when upgrading motherboard (looking for an MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk) is it worth getting the DDR4 variant as all my current RAM is DDR4 (4x8GB 3200MHz). Or to go with a DDR5 mobo and upgrade my RAM? However, the RAM wont go to waste if i do upgrade as I'm upgrading a secondary computer for a friend with the old CPU and mobo.

System specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D [-30 PBO all core]

GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT NITRO+ [1050mV, 2.8GHz core, 2.6Ghz mem]

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB 32GB 6000MHz CL32 DDR5

Storage: 2TB SN850X, 1TB SN850 w/ heatsink, 500GB P5 Plus (OS Storage)

Case: 5000D AIRFLOW

Cooler: Thermalright Frost Commander 140

PSU: Corsair RM850e

12th and 13th gen run quite a bit better with a good DDR5 kit compared to a DDR4 kit. If you're going to be repurposing most of the build I'd just get a DDR5 board and memory now.

Especially now that DDR5 pricing has come down quite a bit.

Yeah, looking for a 13700KF so the extra clock speed on the RAM would be nice, and to "future-proof" it some, just curious if its worth the extra price, thanks!

It's not future proofing, it's paying more for stuff to last longer (like most things in life).   There is no such thing as future proofing.

I concur though, get DDR5 with a new build especially if you can repurpose that RAM anyway.

Unless money is really tight, but then you wouldn't be building a new system with a 13700K then :0

DDR5 builds have come down quite a lot, both the RAM and boards have far less of a premium. This is a build I often suggest for Intel, though FYI, you wouldn't be able to overclock anymore:

PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Rgz8MV

CPU: Intel Core i7-13700F 2.1 GHz 16-Core Processor  ($346.99 @ Amazon)

Motherboard: MSI B760 GAMING PLUS WIFI ATX LGA1700 Motherboard  ($159.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws S5 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory  ($96.99 @ Newegg)

Ive a decently similar build lined up actually, ive a 3060 12gb currently so thats probably the thing being the most bottlenecked by everything, looking to give everything else an upgrade before upgrading that in the future, though id say itll be a while before i get want to get an upgrade for that

Thinking a;

MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk

Frost Commander 140

13700KF

and RAM undecided still but 32GB DDR5 at least

Boards also quite expensive for not really any  reason. You wont be ocing a 13700k anyway since it runs HOT

Thats a fair point, however I quite like the ports offered by this board and the built in both bluetooth is something i like and want, the wifi is also a nice bonus but not explicitly required for me. Im open to suggestions for other boards that fit this calibre if you have any!

Any suggestions on DDR5 RAM i can get in the UK, this looks ideal but is £140+£25 shipping

Edit: Found this, thoughts? Lower clock speed but lower CL also, ik i can overclock the RAM slightly above CPU "rated" speed but 5600 is rated clock speed for 13700KF
