hopefully its not that big of a deal, and i hope they really clean up their acts. even though they are becoming more and more like an "EA" i dont want them to go as it will put a big DENT in the technology and film industry

Sony fails because Japanese companies fail to understand the global market. 

 

They think that the practices and plans that work in Japan will work everywhere. WRONG.

 

They don't care to actually give autonomy to the European and American divisions of their companies. They fail to react in the manners that they should.

 

They seem to think their shit still flies in the open market when it really doesn't.

Comcast/TWC merger has a 30% share of Pay TV and less than that of broadband. Sony & Microsoft will have probably around 70% of gaming market (PC, XBox & PS)

All things considered, Nintendo still has enough market share to not be pushed out of the market by a monopoly.

True, but the legal definitions are different to what we would think. Sometimes 40% can be enough to be declared a monopoly so I guess we'd have to see how it goes.

I feel sorry for Sony. They make fantastic gear, great cameras including their Pro line up of SLRs (the A99 is an amazing full frame camera), they make the Vita which is so underrated, the PS4 which is a great console (if you like consoles), have some fantastic TVs, and their PC/Laptop line was quite decent if slightly over priced. They also make some great phones and tablets.

 

Sure they have too many proprietary formats (I still cant bring myself to buy a bigger Vita card, even though I am desperate) But their stuff is very well engineers, great quality and normally good value

 

But they seem to be overlooked by all the other big brands. LG, Panasonic and Samsung seem to eat up the TV markets, people stopped buying their computers (even thuogh some were great, but they did release some over priced for the spec stuff like pentiums the price of i3/i5s) , They buy nikon, canon, olympus etc over Sony in cameras, even in the console domain half of their potential customers buy Xbox

 

They cannot seem to cut a break. What happened to people liking Sony? They still make great products in all categories. They just seem to not be "COOL" anymore

I'm surprised it took them this long to do it, but it's good to see that Sony finally is. It won't fix much, but it's definitely a start, and it shows just how deep in financial debt they are. I really want Sony to pull out of this depression that they're in, because I really like them, but only time will tell at this point.

 

That's funny, Sony doesn't like you haha. Of course they love your money! And they love locking you down in any way possible and trying to force you into new formats etc etc. Most of the time those new formats are completely un needed and they are doing it just to try and force you to buy their products. Their camera line has tons of examples of this. The PS4 is the first time in likely history Sony has ever done anything consumer friendly and honestly they didn't even do it for the consumer, you know damn well they were standing by to see how Microsofts plans were going to be taken so they could go either direction with their own console. They've screwed over consumers more times than I can count, their electronics aren't even that good anymore! They used to be quite good in car electronics as well then they got rid of their high end ES line, and of course now they brought it back but it's nothing like it used to be, all cheap crap.

What happened is their anti-consumer friendly development caught up to them, and they started trying to maximize profits more rather than building quality products so all their stuff started to suffer and become lower build quality etc. The PS4 and Xbox One are having a hard time because they aren't really next gen and nothing special about them..... Pretty sure Wii U sales have gone up since they both came out lmao. As for TV's they just aren't making the best TV's for the best prices. They are making mediocre products and charging premium prices for them and that's what's wrong with them and why they will fail. It's not about being "COOL" or anything like that, people just don't like them because they don't seem to like the people and don't want to give the people what they want/need. They are more interested in pushing new formats that noone else can manufacture so they can profit on it.

I agree, although you are massively over-estimating the knowledge of average Joe Bloggs consumer. Most would't know what brands have good build quality or not, what a proprietary component is, what performance they should expect for their money.

 

It is all about brand perception. I used to work in retail, people would be like "Who is this, inovo company" "erm you mean Lenovo, the worlds largest computer brand" "yeah never heard of them, I would prefer to buy HP or Acer because I have heard of them" 

 

Some people even up to a few months ago when I still worked there (7 years) were like "I didnt know sony made computers"

I dont think sony do a good job of appealing to people like Samsung/Apple do for example. You just dont hear about them these days. I never see sony camera adverts on TV, yet I see nikon adverts all the time. Never see sony phone adverts, see samsung ones every day.

 

Though going back to enthusiasts, I agree, the havnt been offering the price to performance gadgets that we expect. I guess this filters down, as we would probably not recommend them to our friends or family and it can create a negative air about the products.
