Discord is actually the most problematic thing, it often seems to have bugs despite the OS and chrome being up to date.

that's just discord lmao

Just because you have TPM doesn't mean you will be able to install Win11.  You have to check your processor against the Win11 compatibility list.  I don't know what the cutoff is for AMD, but it won't install on intel unless you have an 8th gen or newer.

that's very easy to bypass. i'm running Windows 11 rn on a 4670K

Just noticed that Atlas adds its own power plan, which sets the minimum processor state to 100% when plugged in.

This is a terrible idea for any multi-core CPU, as lower performance cores are not able to lower their frequency and therefor higher performance cores are not able to boost to their full potential.

I'd argue that if your budget allows it the best bang for the buck these days on the used market is the RX 5700XT which can often be had for around €180 on Ebay. If that's too much, the RX 580 8GB can be had for €80.

You'd probably need at least a 500W PSU, but the extra cost compared to a 400W PSU is negligible.

Meanwhile in 2024: Ivy Bridge-E has finally retired from gaming (but is still not dead).

Yup. My Razer Blade got extremely hot while doing nothing. I still need to figure out the best way to control the fans, as they were als constantly going at max speed. Also no brightness control on Atlas. Yay! ...

Nah, this is a good opportunity to troubleshoot the performance issues I have in Forza. Random microstutters and low FPS, even at relatively low settings. I don't care about the OS, I just need to find out why the hell this is happening and this could help me with that in case Windows is being silly, which it normally is.

And when comes to the pc 7th gen is not old or the system you should have to throw out there is still people buyying 4th gen systems and most of them use clean windows and the systems that need a helping hand (Linux) is systems with core 2 duo or old AMDFx cpus with 2/4Gb of ram.

fun fact, Windows 11 runs smoothly on my (overclock but still) 4670K. i've seen Core 2 Duo machiens running windows 10 relatively fine too, as long as they have more than 4GB of ram.

Testing Atlas right now. The Microsoft Store still works

Fair enough, I guess. Lot of debloater scripts do rip it out (then lead people to wonder why Game Pass doesn't work)

that could just be clock speed. racing games really like high clocked cpu's, you can only get so much out of a mobile chip in a thin laptop before it overheats...

I didn't think I needed a new PC until Linus described 7th gen as obsolete ewaste.

The porn acting pretending like the windows desktop was unusable on an i5 7400 was a bit much.

Nah the thing is it worked fine for a very long time. Then I reinstalled Windows 11 or upgraded or whatever the hell it was (can't remember) and it turned to shit. If this doesn't fix it I will get a recovery image from Razer and see if that does it. Forza should run smooth.

I reinstalled Windows 2 times I think and also made sure that the correct GPU drivers were installed and not just some Windows nonsense. I downloaded the drivers from Nvidia, turned Wi-Fi off, used DDU and then re-installed the driver. So should be alright.

I was going to say this video is alright at a retrospective on Kaby Lake's performance in 2023. However, there isn't any hard figures or statistics.

Then as a 2023 take on the concept of taking pre-built desktops businesses are getting rid off, I feel like LTT's past crack at the idea from 2020 was better.

If the system lagged on desktop with 7400 & 16GB of ram either you don't know how to install windows or the system has some other issue.

I suspect there was nothing wrong with the hardware or software. Rather the writer may be too used to faster responsive times from systems with NVME and perhaps higher refresh rate monitors (not sure what refresh rate they were running in the video but with external capture, maybe just 60Hz?)

As someone that daily drives a thinkpad T480 with a I7-8650u I see no reason that the previous generation chip would be "obsolete". At the end of the day I understand that they have to meet sponsor requirements but I really do feel that this was a bit out of touch.

7th gen was a bit newer then i was expecting too see in the video too cover, but i suppose it wasn't a super in depth video on this topic.

Currently running Atlas OS here, I'm running a version that is before they got the post OS installer stuff going.
So some stuff like warzone 2.0 needs a patch too enable some setting or it won't work & some windows functionality isn't working properly like system properties right clicking on "my computer" just gives me an error & closes but i got access too parts i needed via a shortcut too sysdm.cpl anyway too set virtual ram etc...

Calculator for some reason stopped working (nothing happens clicking on it.)
But there's one on my phone + you can write in stuff in the google search bar or the word calculator in it too get one available so no big deal there either.

Security concern wise i don't really see as an issue, i don't really pirate or download shady stuff.
Like most recent one is like almost 25 years old at this point from myabandonware's website, maybe a mod or two from moddb for half-life 1 & 2.
An iso file for Colin Mcrae 1 too run on my 2005 windows xp laptop.
Honestly gotten more issues with websites & ads then anything in the operating system despite stuff being broken here & there.

So too TLDR this...
Websites in 2022 gets in the way of my day too day use more then Atlas OS problems from an earlier version i got installed since December 1st 2022
With many of those issues fixed by now in the new version ofc.

Ah what gpu & drivers are you running ? there was apparently some odd bug introduced with a newer driver update that playground games are trying too resolve.

Running driverversion 528.49 here atm with my 1660 super & a fps cap too 85 and i never see it dip below that with a mix of low - medium settings here.
Think it was one of the audi a6 sedans & specifically the ground deformation that caused performance issues on newer driver versions atm, specially in the recent rally DLC.

Might aswell post the entire stats:

  • i7-11800H
  • 2x 8GB 3200Mhz DDR4
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • RTX3060 Mobile

Not sure which driver I was running at the time. 528.49 seems familiar, but not sure. But I was also having this issue for months.

(The only Audi I was driving was the Quattro :D)

As long as Origin and it's services are not running in the background it's fine.

How risky it is to have Atlas OS on my main gaming machine - a fairly new system with rtx 3070? I can do the updates manually and install eset that I already have.

I use it mainly for gaming and some marginal Photoshop/Premiere. I need those to keep working.

it's insanely stupid. i can't believe LTT would promote this. your system is plenty fast to run regular Windows. you're asking for trouble with Atlas for sure.

Stupid is me, though. And me is stupid.

My rig is getting less responsive when I run FFox and chrome, each with dozens of tabs open. So I'm curious. It's not a memory issue (plenty left of the 32Gb). It's not the CPU (at 10% at the most). The GPU isn't even trying to pretend it is working hard... sort of frustrating.

that's jsut browsers being browsers. i have that on Linux too, changing the OS won't help.

enable Chrome's memory saver that sleeps inactive tabs, that helps.
