Is 4k better on a 55inch TV than a 27inch monitor

The real important part is how close you are to the screen.

Again depends on the distance. At couch distance you probably aren't going to notice much, but at monitor distance 1080 would look absolutely crud.

personal preference really, i like the sharpness of 4k on a 27inch monitor better than a 32inch monitor or a 42inch tv.

 

For a tv 4k is better than 1080p

With that limited information, and going only on that.... Yes 4k is better than 1080p. But there is more to it than just resolution.

4K is better than 1080p but what shine is HDR content which normally in 4K. Off course you need a good 4K HDR TV or monitor to enjoy it.

4K is not pointless... it's good in both cases, are you buying a TV or a monitor, how much worth it to individual for each case does it matter. Be it being fine with 1080p TV but appreciate 4K monitor more.

A 55" 4k 16:9 TV at 55" view distance will look as good as a  4k 27" Monitor at 27" view distance.

 

However a 55" 4k display at 27" view distance will look considerably worse as you will have half the PPD and be able to discern individual pixels.

 

A 55" 1080p display would require a 115" ..or 9.6 feet, view distance to look as good. BUT you FoV would be a measly 24 degrees.
