Summary

ADSBExchange, and open source project that tracks the positions of aircraft from crowdsourced data, has been sold by its founder, Dan Streufert, to PE firm JetNet. The site is famous for not filtering out the FAA "Limiting Aircraft Data Displayed", making it the ideal data source for applications like ElonJet. The community, including administrators, were not aware of this before it happened, leading to outrage. Since the project is open source, the purchase only truly includes the website, branding, and data on their servers. Many feeders (who crowdsource the data) have stopped their feed, while the community plans to start a seperate site to replace it.  

Update: 

1) Claims that there was a verbal agreement from someone who helped get the site from running at a loss to being organized owning a share of the company have surfaced. 

2) The replacement website is globe.ADSB.fi, with feeds at feed.adsb.fi. 

3) Forbes is soon going to do a report with interviews with Dan and some members of the Board or Directors of ADSB exchange. 

 

My Take

I can't wait to see the look on the faces of JetNet when they realize they didn't buy what they thought.
