Removing heatspreader from Ram

Hi!

I bought a set of Patriot Viper Venom DDR5-6000 CL36 kit and I am worried about Ram clearance. According to the specsheet it's 43mm high.

That means the NH-D15 is out of the question already with it's mere 32mm clearance and the Dark Rock Pro 4 is just not tall enough with 40mm clearance.

Is it safe to remove the heatspreader from the Ram modules? Is it just for show or do these modules actually produce enough heat to need cooling?

Can you recommend any other cooler that might work for a 13600K?

Depending on the space available you may be able to simply move the RAM to slots 2 and 3, or 3 & 4 instead of the standard 1 & 3 slots.

The heatspreaders aren't necessary, but they are definitely a good idea. DDR5 does get really hot thanks to the on board PMIC, and while it doesn't produce much in the way of heat, it does need some sort of cooling if you plan to run voltages higher than JEDEC.

Besides, removing heatspreaders voids your warranty, and also isnt hard to mess up on.

If raising the fan doesn't get it to fit, the Scythe Fuma 2 is a solid option with pretty good memory support, and is most of the performance of an NH-D15

Interesting, thanks!

I think I will get the NH-D15 regardless and see if I can nudge the fan up. If not, I'll replace it with a 120mm. Should work right?

That would put the ram in single channel mode. Bad idea.

  • 3 weeks later...

I could easily mount the fan of the Noctua NH-D15 a little higher to make enough room for the Ram! Happy end!
