AMD Announces 7900XTX $999, 7900XT $899, Arriving December 13

Mister Woof

I personally fell in love with ray tracing.  And the volumetric lighting inside is just so amazing.  I cant wait to crank all settings to the max on a new gpu.

It is not in AMDs best interest to make the 6000 series look good therefore you shouldn’t assume they are making every test fair and representative. It is also literally on the slide “results may vary”. Take your fanboy hat off and stop reading what you want.

Its weird that this is twice now, you quote me, and say exactly what I said. Are you quoting the correct person?

The rest of us here are ok with ballpark numbers at this point. Getting this much into the weeds is just asking for trouble since to much is unknown, and driver optimization's are still happening constantly meaning all these numbers will be bunk by launch.

I've not looked in detail at RTGI but presuming it is giving RT-like effects using traditional means, it seems unlikely real RT hardware would be able to assist it.

iinm, PG's RTGI shader use ray marching, but he can't use RT cores to accelerate the rays traversal since Reshade is not expose to specific GPU feature like RT cores.

No you’re trying to take AMDs word as gospel. You’re not asking questions of if the numbers are valid you’re just assuming they are. They might not be in the same ballpark, they can easily fudge it to get a 1.2x improvement to 1.7

Do you actually use Ray Tracing and feel it's paramount to your gaming experience?

yes and no, not about using but it becomes more normal and is what is pushed by the industry.

While its not really a need for gaming, it can be more important to have, when games get even more demanding RT might become handy in some of the render pipeline and multiple functions to it.

then you have some productivity workloads but also need other stuff to be supported and all the software support for either thing you want to do.

Minecraft looks noticeably better with RT but I haven’t seen anything else that gets close to that much difference.

Iirc it doesn't work on Java edition anyways so it's worthless to me personally. Kind of a shame bc it looks nice and equivalent shaders absolutely destroy performance.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

Thought you could use Java and Microsoft versions simultaneously now

Yes but non Java is an abomination and also doesn't support mods, of which I use many (I run a modded server).

Any information whether either companies will have any cards coming out in the near future for mere mortals?

Yeah i dont trust a word of what AMD or Nvidia says. at the end of the day they are both business that want our money. The only sensible thing to do is wait till user benchmarks of both are out. That is unless there are specific features you require. Like for me, I went 4090 because I'm also a 3d artist. The RAM is a nice to have, but CUDA is a must and the best real time look dev apps support RTX now. Sure its not "necessary" to have a card this powerful. But for me its a benefit to my work and pleasure and that makes it a good investment.

  • 1 month later...

Reviews are starting to get in, and I must say, although I secrectly was hoping the XTX would be further ahead of the 4080, I am thoroughly impressed.

The 4080 only beats it in RT performance, and even at that, outside of Cyberpunk the difference isn't even that big. I couldn't see the XT in GN's benchmarks, but Belgian benchmarks show the XT slotting in nicely between the 3090Ti and the 4080.

AMD did great here, and RDNA3 is a huge improvement. So I am guessing a 4070Ti is on the horizon next to battle with the XT? Awkward for all the 3090Ti owners though...

I recall the 4080 *cough* 12GB is "up to 30%" slower than the 16GB, 7900XT is around 15% slower.

improvement for price? but it would be fun to see them doing well.
Also to remember their raytracing features to FSR 3, forgot when it was releasing, but I guess we have to wait for des 15 for the release of the card? (nvm, reviews being out). Hopefully they can have well worth 7600 cards for half the price or more, I guess these chiplets can't reduce the cost that much and performance gains. Although they did market the 24GB of Vram. then to the CPU side for maybe coming 3D chips which might have some rumors about.

I'd like to object to AMD calling these "7900" GPUs 😄 The XTX barely passes the 4080 on average without RT, and like RDNA2 drops another tier or so with RT. The 9 might have been worth it if it were still going against Ampere, but it isn't. So I really don't see these changing the balance compared to last gen RDNA2 vs Ampere. So once again it is a bit cheaper than nvidia, but you get less.

What reviews did you watch lol?  Most games the 7900xtx is only 10-20% over 6950xt.  This is an epic failure.

Yep, I'm in the middle of listening to Digital Foundry's review and they seem mostly happy. The biggest complaint so far seems to be the XT value vs the XTX. 10% price cut, for more than 10% performance drop. Haven't heard anywhere call them a failure though, let alone an "epic" one.

Yup. The 7900xt is especially not a "900" gpu. It should really be the 7800xt or even 7700xt. It's like 40-50% overpriced just like the RTX 4080.

It's actually laughable how much of a turdbiscuit this whole gen is from both red/green
