Important to note here that LGA2011 and LGA2011-3 are not cross compatible. If your machine supports v0/v2 CPUs, you can't upgrade to a v3/v4 with just a CPU swap.

However, you can usually upgrade within those generations (v0 to v2, v3 to v4) with just a BIOS update. (The HP Z420 needs to be the 3.0 motherboard revision, but that's an outlier.)

If you buy a barebones machine, assume it's coming with the first ever BIOS and pick up the cheapest base model non-hyperthreaded v0 or v3 to test and update it with.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

I dont get this.

Worskstation builds are ok for below 100 usd, but if you can go near 200, why get into that trouble of all the DIY'ing ? pretty sure i5 6500k is cheap enough with a ok board.

I think you mean 6600K but nonetheless that'd be an extremely bad purchase decision. If you want to make use of the 6600k you'll need a z170/z270 motherboard. And by the end you're looking at spending 100$ at least for a CPU+motherboard combo, nevermind the rest of the components. You're much better off spending your money buying into the intel 8th/9th gen platform or ryzen. You can get your hands on a decent B450 motherboard and a ryzen 5 1600 for around 100-120$. Not only do you get overclocking support but also a great upgrade path. As for 8th/9th gen intel there's plenty of prebuilts available with i5's for around 200$, some for as little as 170$.

I think the idea is after using the under 100$ cpu what upgrades make sense to improve it.

My plan is too get a nividia T400. about 200USD

The idea behind the video is too have ideas to upgrade though a couple years.

I would personally would have opped for a older atleast 7th gen intel (seen one for 50USD at a college surplus store)

Is that for a whole system with the GPU or just the GPU alone? Because for 200$ you can get a low profile 1650.

You can get an optiplex 3060 mini tower with an i5 8400, 16gb of ram and 256gb ssd for about 200$ of ebay which would be preferable over the 6th/7th gen platform. For the price of an i7 7700 you can typically get an i7 8700. Unless you can get a really good deal I personally wouldn't buy 6th/7th gen machines.

Huh. Looks like Dell decided to go stupid with their newer SFF optiplex designs and place their x16 slots below the 4x rather than above it. The 7010 SFF I'm familiar with can fit dual slot low profile graphics cards but I guess the newer ones can't.

There's still other cards to look at. For example there's plenty of low profile single slot RX 6400's which should perform close enough to a 1650 at around 150$ new and possibly even less used, if you can find someone selling one used. Much better value than the 200$ TU400. Saphire, XFX, Yeston and VASTARMOR have low profile single slot rx 6400's.

Yeah I own a optiplex 5050.

So I was looking at the 4gb varient of the T400 which is 200USD https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1702272-REG/pny_technologies_vcnt4004gb_pb_nvidia_t400_graphics_card.html

a 2gb varient is 156USD https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1661145-REG/pny_technologies_vcnt400_pb_t400_graphics_card.html

An extra 40$ over the 4GB model would get you a T600. Still nonetheless the RX 6400 seems to be the best choice overall, cheaper, faster than both the t400 and t600 and it's actually in stock right now.

Good point. I have a TrueNAS server I made out of a 7500, a B250M board and a 500W PSU I got used for $250AUD so about $160USD. And that's after he took off like $20 for the case and hard drive that I didn't need so a pretty good starting point for a budget system I'd say.

It takes a bit of watching out on the used sites but you can usually find something if you're patient and persistent.

*Help*

I have a Z800 - Dual CPU Rig. It's my Baby and I Love it more than my more Modern Rigs. Even thought it's old, it still kicks some butt, and more than enough for your day to day heavy multi screened tasks. It running circles around your modern laptops, while still on DDR3....

That being said, I need help with this Clover Bootloader.

I want to MAX OUT this rig, it's my classic car re-build project and I want to "Give Her All She's Got!".

I have such respect for these Machines with very interesting Histories, Designed by BMW, made by HP, and sold to Governments to run Missile Silo's, and All with being completely tool-less, right.... Sorry LTT Screwdriver 😉

N-E-Way, Can I get a link for the right Clover Files & if Possible some basic Instructions one how to get these M.2 drives Booting?

Thank you all,

Your Friendly Z800 Stan.

What annoyed me is that instead of suggesting to upgrade PSU he suggested to get shittier GPU. Like if the system required the proprietary PSU, okay, but I feel like most people will forget or not know that the video is about using an old office prebuilt as the base.
