Why are some cpus so weird?

Usually the biggest factor when designing a CPU socket layout is trace distance, because it ties into signal integrity. If a rectangle offers slightly better signal integrity than a really fat square, they'll go with the rectangle. Usually the difference is really tiny, but even tiny differences can save a tiny amount of money design-wise, and tiny amounts of money stretched over millions of products translates to an actually pretty big difference.

Again I am still kinda new to pc parts and stuff and i got curious since i am used to the square cpus why are some so weird looking like the i7-12700 a rectangle cpu idkw but its kinda rlly triggering to me i just want it to be square again聽 馃槥聽it hurts my eyes to see it lol

Don鈥檛 look up threadrippers then lol. I assume it鈥檚 rectangular because that鈥檚 the way it needed to be shaped to fit everything the most optimal way, and/or they liked the way it looks. Probably plenty of other reasons I鈥檓 unaware of.

Then AMDs Threadripper will blow your mind.

ryzen_threadripper_1950x_16-100731168-large.webp

The size or aspect ratio of a CPU is really just so it can encompass the fragile silicon wafer thats inside.

And since now the tech allows to have several different wafers on a single chip they dont have to be square anymore for just the 1.

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!

It's because it's using the LGA 1700 socket which is, for better or worse, rectangular.聽

The reason that socket is the way it is is because Intel needed more pins inside the CPU (1700 instead of 1200), and the way they decided was best was to just elongate the socket.聽

Personally, I'm of the mindset that once the cooler is installed and the case has been buttoned up, I'm not likely to see it again for a good long time anyway. But being autistic, I get the square vs rectangular thing. Certain little things like that will drive me nuts on occasion.

I don't badmouth others' input, I'd appreciate others not badmouthing mine. *** More below ***

They're talking about the actual CPU under the IHS.
