GPU prices are still insane

Charles_Masterman

It seems as if the prices for new (lower tier) GPUs have not gone down one bit and I'm afraid I'll buy a heavily crypto-mined GPU on eBay, does someone know a trusty GPU seller on eBay?

"Have not gone down one bit" I'm not quite sure what you mean...

Personally, I'd call that "one bit". These are for RTX A-series cards but similar trends have been going on for gaming cards, at least here in the US. Your area could be different though

Well, they have.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

When they start at astronomical prices, an then go down 25%, it may be that they go back to MSRP, but that's the way the world is.

Why would you buy a 1660 when cards like the RTX 3060 and RX 6600 are available?

The 1660 non-ti non-super wasn't even worth buying new.

2020 MSRP made no sense because they were established before the coronacircus times..

Then they went up to the roof because the market demand increased a lot and at the same time miners took half (at least) of the shipments...

Now think that in 2 years there's been at least 15% inflation, so current prices seem rather fair to me. Think that in 2018 a 2080Ti was $1200, that's now the price of a 3090 (admittedly only some on sales but still)

Also in 2019 I got a 2060S for 430EUR, and now a 6650XT (+20%) costs the same, and I didn't even include inflation...

Edit : was talking about US/Europe prices, idk what they are in the Emirates or South Africa...

Where are you shopping?

I looked at caseking.de a german retailer, and they have them start under 450 euro.

I just looked at 3060's in 3-4 different random Euro zone countries on PCPartPicker and they were all in the 450-600 range.

It would help if you actually told us WHICH country you're in and what retailers you have access to.

Cards that have been mined on are usually fine, BTW.

$2000 isn't a good deal on that card.  Everything over about a 3080ti was reduced here they officially dropped the 3090ti to $1599 but I've seen some AIB models for $1499.

For new cards the lower down you go with cards, the more overpriced they've stayed (and Nvidia more than AMD). 3050 is still horribly over MSRP, and 3060 still too much over it's realistic price. For AMD it's better, the 6600 has been jumping up and down for good prices, 6600 XT as well.

The higher up you go the more price drops happened (which is in line for marketing/advertising, general sales behaviour of AMD/Nvidia before a new launch more than anything).

1. New gen is coming high-end first so more important to move that product = Nvidia/AMD eat the loss for the AIBs/distributors and give rebates/credit/deals/other incentives

2. In turn distributors eat the loss for end sellers (at least in big markets)

3. Promos with games

4. Price new cards higher than calculated to be productive (reverse psychology + fomo = the real reason/calculated use of Nvidia founders edition prices)[the extra money from Nvidia selling directly is icing on the cake, no grand conspiracy, just 1970-1980s next-gen economics theories sprinkled with Sun Tzu's teachings]

5. Old product flies off the shelves to make room for new (worked like a charm the last few cycles I paid more attention)

Few problems that arise is:

1. not a big market, distributors/AIBs didn't get helped by AMD/Intel (either in the moment, or for the future)

2. distributors that didn't trickle down help to individual shops for reasons other than a small market catch 22

3. individual shops that didn't trickle down to consumers due to unknown unknowns (to me currently).

4. distributors and individual shops known unknowns that are too speculative and individual country/market/company policy related for me to bother writing out (too little statistical chance/that's straying too far from Occam's razor)

5. and whatever unknown knowns I might have missed to apply/forgotten about from past knowledge xD

Things that feel like problems/conspiracy but are just supply + demand + manufacturing constraints due to economics + physics (and basically just happen organically irrelevant of human intention):

1. Delays for top cards

2. Mid + Low end uncertain release delay

P.S. Yes I know the concepts and applications (in game theory and other stuff) predate Rumsfeld and have more accurate scientific terminology, but you can't deny Rumsfeld's words are just too cool to not use xD
