Don't let Qualcomm have all the fun - Mediatek announces Dimensity 9000+

Following the footsteps of Qualcomm's 8G1+ processor, Mediatek is also refreshing their flagship Dimensity 9000 SoC with an upclocked model.

MediaTek claims that the new chip provides a 5% boost in CPU performance and 10% improvement in GPU performance compared to the Dimensity 9000, which should result in some real-world performance gains. But the difference may not be as noteworthy as it was between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1.

MediaTek says that devices featuring its latest flagship chipset will hit the market sometime in Q3 2022. The company is yet to share the names of the OEMs that will use the chips on their upcoming flagships. We don’t expect the list to be too long since the Dimensity 9000 hasn’t made an appearance on many devices either. So far, only OPPO and Vivo have launched phones featuring MediaTek’s previous flagship chipset, likely because most buyers still prefer Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets in the premium smartphone segment.

My thoughts

The improvements doesn't look that much significant compared to the snapdragon, I'll wait for the reviews to come out first.

It's unlikely I will ever buy an Android device with MediaTek chip when they don't adhere to the GPL and provide source code for their chipsets. Means custom ROM scene for these chips is pretty much non existent.

custom ROM

Which has been important since Google dropped the motto "Don't be evil".

Have they not been called out on this, legally speaking?

With SoCs the important bit isn't the speed of the chip, but what else it can do. If your ISP sucks, no one's going to care how fast you can clock your cores.

Imma be honest, I really always forget Mediatek makes chips.

😛 do wonder how their "wifi 7" chips would be like, not sure if this chip or a newer unreleased one.

Would assume qualcomm had something too, but later I guess early to mid 2023.

although,

Realistically, we expect the first Wi-Fi 7 routers to go on sale some time in 2023, and those may not offer the fastest 9.6Gbps speeds. The standard may not even be certified until 2024, making early adoption risky. It will probably be an even longer wait for a Wi-Fi 7 phone, laptop or tablet.

They basically overclocked the main core. So real world gains, where CPU can't run it at full frequency because it would overheat, might be close to zero.

The funniest/saddest thing about the Dimensity 9000 chips is that a majority of phones with that SoC aren't even released outside China at all. What conpany sells the D9000 globally? It's Vivo and their non-pro X80.

I'm getting more curious as a bunch of review videos on the X80 I've watched state that, yes it is surprisingly competitive with Qualcomm's 8 Gen 1, and the X80 does manage heat very well, but some games, particularly Genshin and PUBG, aren't optimized for this, and result in slowdowns that occur at a long period of gaming. These issues get resolved via a software patch (especially as the patches get applied on a Redmi phone earlier and got them resolved) thus they expect Vivo to patch that phone for gaming optimizations.

Curious to see if any company is looking to release more D9000 phones globally.

If Mediatek released their sourecode for custom ROMs I would have no issues buying a phone with one of their chips. Until that happens I am only buying Qualcomm powered phones
