For what purpose you use your sick powerful hardware

In before a bunch of people talk about 3D modelling and video rendering when in reality they did a "beginners guide to SketchUp" once, and have pirated Adobe Premier but only uses like 2 features in it to string together some random clips from a game they played.

Let's be honest here. 99% of the forum users with really high end computers bought it for bragging rights, not because they need it.

That, and the dopamine hit you get when you buy expensive stuff.

When I was younger I had my parents buy me a bad azz PC just for bragging rights and "max fps bro" so I know exactly how true this is haha.

Nowadays I have a career so I'm actually quite reliant on a decently fast PC. Weird how things change, isn't it?

I know absolutely nothing about video editing, rendering or 3D modeling. I'd like to, but the most advanced thing I do is CAD.

~` please , don't let my whole life burn down `~

I mainly use mine to power my racing simulator. I have a .bat file that will switch it over to my desk where I do my general gaming and web browsing from. I'd say I put it to pretty good use. It's coming due for an upgrade later this year, I hope!

I dont disagree, but that doesn't work for me, Im always like "f... i could have gotten this cheaper somewhere,  probably!" (except my 3070, i got that for 700 when everyone else was seemingly buying them for ~1500... i thought that was a pretty good deal)

what do you use for that,  if you don't mind me asking?  I have a bunch of older low res videos (but digital) that need upscaling (or uprendering, if possible!)

Computer hardware is my hobby and has been since the 1980s.

I started doing 3D in the mid 80s and at first did jobs to pay for my hobby.  Later 3D became my only job.

Computer hardware and gaming are still my hobbies so I still like buying high end hardware.

I am retired now so my computers are no longer for work but if I started back tomorrow all I would need is the software.

I did not know out of a sudden there are so many 3D designers here 🤓

Please do not take offence for my apparent confusion or rudeness,it's not intent me to be like that,it's just my BPD,be nice to me,and I'll return twice better,be rude and usually I get easly pissed of...I'll try to help anyone here,as long as it's something I dealt with, and even if you think I'm rude or not polite, forgive me,  it's not me it's my BPD.

Thanks for understanding.

I play 10-20 year old games, watch youtube videos and read forum posts.

Sometimes I do small scale data science and AI tasks that I could probably be "OK" doing with a much slower system.

While the Radeon 7000 PCI may have released in 2001, for 1999, my Power Mac G4 Yikes! was an awesome machine.

Now I play Minecraft on it, mostly.

I use my workstation for modeling in Cinema 4D, video editing, occasional gaming, and stuff like web browsing, watching videos, etc.

I have another system with an identical CPU but stripped down in every other aspect, the whole point of it being to do Cinema 4D CPU renders of things I model on my workstation, but without making my main PC unusable for days on end (it's miserable to do anything else while CPU rendering since the CPU is constantly at 100%).

Workstation is in my signature and profile, both systems use a Xeon E5-2690 v1 CPU. Once $2000, now $40 but still give $200 chips a run for their money. Especially if you use two over QPI for total 16 cores 32 threads - it competes with Ryzen 9 in rendering. I occasionally pop an extra CPU in my workstation for a demanding render - it has a removable riser for second CPU, just like a PCIe card but it weighs 8 pounds and uses a several hundred pin connector.

the version with the "swing out" motherboard?

idk why that didn't become standard, it makes upgrading etc so much easier!?

and it wouldn't stop "modern" cooling solutions either, baffling to me.

Shipping dock management and large scale supply chain inventory software.

For this we have relatively basic HP prodesks at work, i5 8500’s and 16gb of ddr4, nothing fancy, but that’s because the gigantic databases this software pulls from are all handled by a large server we have in the building.

When you need to take your work home with you, the more cpu performance the better. For laptops this has turned into spec imbalanced Thinkpad P17 gen 2’s, Xeon W11955m 8c/16t processors and 64 or 128gb of ecc ddr4. The gpu is unimportant.

For my own personal system I use an older P50 for work related stuff with a Xeon e3 1505m v5 and 64gb of ram, not as impressive in the cpu department and it shows trying to open up JDA and reference every active route across the entire NAFTA routing array, but it’s better than terrible.

Nothing too fancy, just a 5600G. The PC is hooked up to a Dell UltraSharp from the mid-2000s, which I bought in a part of town where 99% of the cars are likely stolen and even more likely full of used needles under the seats.

Anyway, I just use it for web browsing, writing things for the blog I have on here, as well as bulk storage for all my photos. I bought the CPU right before AMD announced those much cheaper CPUs this year, so I'm still a little pissed to say the least.

Highly knowledgeable in all the obscure 2000s hardware & software you'll never need to ask about

Hi guys.

I suppose some of you own like 5950x, 12900K, 11900K, threadripper etc..

For what purpose/business you use it except gaming?

Do you make $ from it?

I use my computer to run a MC server, editing videos on Da Vinci Resolve, VRChat world creation, art creation on thing such as medibang paint, streaming, coding and general software development, VM stuff and watching anime.

I don't make any money from it right now which is pretty sad, but oh well, I do plan on making money from the things I code though.
