Download speed capped?

xxx.sps

So my internet is about 600Mbs for downloading but when installing updates the install maxes at about 20Mbs and then stays there. What is limiting my download speed and how can I removed the limiter? I don't believe it is hardware but I could be wrong, I don't have ethernet connection directly but speed tests still show about 600Mbs without ethernet.

Speedtest.net and alternatives as default only shows the speeds from servers closest to you. Your bottleneck might be congestion down the line, try testing with a server abroad or far away. Your ISP also might be throttling regular suspects like steam, netflix and windows update servers.

Slowest link determines the speeds. Just because you're able to download at 600 Mbps doesn't mean the server you're downloading from is capable (or willing) to upload at that speed. If a server has 1 Gbit upstream, but it's currently serving dowloads to hundreds or thousands of people, it'll have to split its bandwidth between these.

Late at night is middle of the day other side of the globe 😉 Depending on where the server is, late at night might not actually be the best time.

In that case I'd assume it's simply the server's connection that is the bottleneck here. Such a server probably doesn't have the fastest connection available to it or may even be capped on purpose for some reason.

Indeed.  I'm renting a VPS in the US and its capped at 400Mbit.  Depending on what the server is for and how much money the people running it are willing to throw at it, capping is an easy way to keep costs down.  If I knew I wanted to be able to serve 100 clients, I might choose to further cap that VPS down to 4Mbit per client.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7
