You spend a lot of money, so you probably want good up time aswell. So why use only 1 switch, and single port network cards. If your switch dies now, or even when you want to update the switch firmware everything will stop working. You also also mentioned FS.com below the video. So why use DAC cables instead of fiber and transceivers. Fiber is so much easier to work with for cable management.

Curious what the role of the FS switch is here. Are the 8 cables from the HGX going into the switch? I would think the two cables from each blade go into the switch where the entire throughput is combined to take advantage of that switch's max bandwidth. I'm also curious since you are using those short cables if QSFP has a length limit, or does it have to do with signaling?

This is all loaner equipment for a demo, not a capital purchase for their actual server room. The vendors probably sent short DACs because they're more rugged and less expensive than fiber QSFPs.

 

You're right if this was going to be a production machine, but the whole point is to make a fun series of videos full of big numbers.

They are sending all this back?  This makes much more sense now. 

 

I thought this was a permanent new installation and was starting to get nervous they weren't installing dedicated circuits in the building and there's no UPS in sight.

All (q)SFPs have length limits, 100g MM is 70 or 100m roughly depending on the use of OM3 or OM4, and 100g single mode is anywhere from 2km to 500+km depending on the optic. 400G is in basically the same boat as 100g and whatnot, 200g optics aren't really that prevalent if you can find them. They sent DACs because they were cheaper and much more difficult to fuck up basically compared to fiber optics. DACs and AoC are usually under 10m but you don't run the risk of something getting into the optic, a fiber cable getting bent too much, etc.

It's also a mellanox (now Nvidia)switch, not a FS switch although I think FS partners with them to sell their switches, would have to triple check myself on that.

I personally still prefer all patching to be fiber, I just do not like DACs when density is anywhere near the discussion. Also our racks are not the extra wide kind with vertical cable management  which is a huge factor for why I do everything with fiber patching.

I think that was referring to a different server. Since I think he mentions that many of the editors working off of it at the same time wouldn't work to show it's capabilities.

Maybe between the Vault rebuild project and the various unforeseen house construction challenges, Jake just ran out of bandwidth and something had to get back-burnered.
