Can i run 4K?

DarrenP

Until you feast your eyes on the glorious bliss of 1080p+ and never want to go back, even if your gpu is shitting itself at 30fps...

...true story.

I bet that is a true story. Another question. Might not be optimal. However i have a friend who is willing to sell me two GTX 680 Classifieds 2GB versions for 400 bucks. I can get 500 for my 780 would i be able to play with two 680's? I know the VRAM will be limiting. how limiting though?

OC those Classifieds and you have yourself something that's probably quite capable.  More so than a 690 or 780 I estimate.

4k isnt as optimal as it seems, also you can downscale the monitor to play 1440p games

not worth the risk. the monitors cost allot and what if it ends up not working then you have a monitor you cant use unless you can get the money for a 780. dont

you can always just play at 1080p until you get a second card, since 4k is exactly 4 times 1080p, so no weird scaling issues arise

But once I pick up a NH-D15, then some new monitors I will :P

Or maybe switch those around....

i was wanting to jump straight to 4k but dunno mate, its just not feasible yet, i mean other than games theres many probs such as low content and small stuff (eww). imo its just not worth the premium yet maybe if it was better optimised or more feature rich. sure the ideas nice but maybe in a year or 3.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only a GTX 1080, just a single 1080, where my glorious PC once stood....

For that is all I need, For the Emperor of Man, Jen-Hsun Huang, protects. We march for Nvidia, and we shall know no fear!

Well 4K can be used at other times when not playing games making everything sharp/giving more real estate

So you can scale res up and down? or just down?

you can play games at a resolution lower than your monitors yes. higher, no point...

1 GTX 780 will be fine with medium settings, minimum AA. It will look miles better than 1080P. If your GPU can't hack it? It will downscale perfectly to 1080P :) GET THE MONITOR

mmk, was wondering because I have a 720p monitor

720*2 = 1440

yeah, if you cant run 1440p, its better to downscale to 720 than 1080, since the game might scale it ugly otherwise :)

I just got  27" 1440p and while a small part of me wishes I got 4k, 1440p looks AMAZING, also the desktop is hard to see, I cannot imagine how horrible web browsing will be at 4k, text will be a quarter the size it is on a normal 1080p monitor at this size!!!

Also in a few months you might find your system struggling as things like witcher 3 come out. Your system will age SUPER fast if it isnt even capable of current games at that resolution right now

I have a single R9 290 and I run 4K (with that exact monitor) on many games without AA and by turning a few settings from Ultra to high. I almost get 60 FPS.

Spoiler

Pretty wise words here.  I thought because my 670 pwned everything I threw at it at 1200p that going bigger would be fine.  Nope.  Time to nickname my card "Wheezy" :(

Exactly my thinking. I don't play games at max settings. I don't really care to. It doesn't bother me if the setting are medium or high rather than Ultra.

Ok, so the regular laws of math don't apply :P

Or to go up 1 it's *2?

So 720p*2=1080p?

I don't get how resolutions work.

The main reason i'm even thinking of getting a 4K monitor is because the 1440 monitor i was looking at, at work is a PB278Q and is going for $629.99 CDN right now. So i mean i could make the jump to 4K. I'm just thinking is it worth it? The PB278Q looks phenomenal to me as it is...

They increase horizontally AND vertically

1280 x 780 = 921,600 (pixels)

2560 x 1440 = 3,686,400 (pixels)
