Can i run 4K?

DarrenP

I remember John Carmack saying that 4K is still going to be years away from being a decent standard in households and monitors.  1440p and 1600p will be the next affordable step for the vast majority and GSync/Freesync inclusion.

While the monitor may be a steal at $700, the equipment required to make it perform smoothly is not quite there yet and current gaming isn't currently taking advantage of it - which will require even more horsepower to pump out those pixels in future.

The sooner we get crazy graphene processors the better :)

I honestly think that the 4K screens are great if you're gonna watch movies and shows, do graphic art on (providing they have the Adobe RGB) or for high end workstation use, but current gen gaming is too intensive right now.  Gsync/Freesync on 4K though... hmmmm.....

3gb is enough for almost all games we have now. But probably not in future.

The 3gb of vram will become a bottleneck very quickly. If 2gb is recommended for 1080p then 8gb is what we should eventually have for 4k. We have a ways to go before performance at 4k is actually decent without destroying your wallet. If I were you is just pick up a 1440p panel. I recently did and it's amazing. I also have 3gb of vram, and I have no problems maxing out battlefield 4 at 1440p.

2.5k is far more realistic, i am building a so called 4k capable machine, but will be buying a 1440p (hopefully 120hz but not too bothered) monitor.

4K is all wow and no go.

So did the GTX 480 in it's prime, but it still was stonking fast, and well, for the price i paid, better value too.

Heat can always be sorted, especially now that aftermarket 290's are out there.

To be fair that cooler just more efficiently moves the heat from the card into your room, making your room warmer :P

Although just looking briefly on Google implies that the actual heat output of a 290X and a 780 Ti is about the same. (250 Watts)
