"Nothing" phone to arrive summer 2022 (Update: specs leak and reveal date)

Update:

Nothing has unveiled their smartphone today, though the stream didn't show a physical model of the phone, they focused more on their custom android build, nOS.

The Nothing live event promised something, which ended up being a teaser for the Nothing Phone 1 and the new Nothing OS Android skin. We learned some details, but there's still a lot we don't know about this new phone. What the phone will look like and what specs it'll have aren't clear yet, though Carl Pei did say it'll use a Snapdragon chip. Pei's smartphone heritage, having co-founded OnePlus and then leaving in late 2021, means that the Nothing Phone 1 could be a big deal. The big question is whether the Nothing Phone 1 will aim to be a flagship Android killer as OnePlus phones used to be before they slowly moved into the flagship arena themselves, or if the Nothing phone will target the budget sector in a bid to take on the likes of the OnePlus Nord 2 and Google Pixel 5a.

Pei also talked about Nothing OS, a rendition of Android that aims to load apps faster and learn from your usage. Nothing has promised three years of platform updates and four years of security patches, lagging behind Samsung. The Nothing launcher will be coming in April. Nothing OS will use the dot matrix font that we've seen Nothing adopt so far and offer some throwback retro-futuristic design elements, like a tape recorder design for the voice recorder. Nothing OS also aims to provide seamless support for third-party products like AirPods and Tesla vehicles.

Thoughts:

It's hard to say how worth the phone is without some reviews considering the dwindling performance of oneplus have been of lately, or could it be because carl left that oneplus is doing worse? Fully transparent shell would be a major attraction point for me since phone colors and texture these days are no different to cars anyway.

After the release of the nothing ear and earlier announcement of the nothing watch, It seems like carl Pei has gone back to his roots with the nothing phone: An all clear android phone with possibly a snapdragon 8G1.

At key places on the back, there are words etched on the panels covering the components. Things like “Rethinking Everything,” “Nothingness of this Universe” or “Power in Less.” The phone has a peculiar OnePlus feel to it, and I don’t blame Osho to go that way since Carl’s contribution in crafting the flagship killer has been pivotal in the brand’s success.

 

My thoughts

While some say the oneplus quality has never been the same ever since Carl left the company, would there be anything particular this phone would have that would let it stand out among the crowd? Xiaomi did try a transparent phone in the past but it was half-assed.

Considering how disappointing and shite the earbuds are, I expect nothing good to come of this.

 

This isn't a phone company. The brand doesn't even really have a direction. How are they going to support the phone? Right. They won't.

See-through iPhone 7. I like to see cool designs but I don’t think I could ever swap from iPhones.

Same. Despite idiocies iPhones and iOS have, there is no way I'm going to subject myself to horrifying mess of Android's updating ever again. I've dealt with that crap for almost a decade and hated it from day one to day I replaced my last Android phone with an iPhone. Getting major updates for more than arbitrary 2 years and actually get them the moment everyone else get, is just so sublime there is basically just no way I'm going back to Android phones, even if that means I'll have stuff like notch till end of my life. Samsung, maybe, because they are the 0.01% of those Androids that doesn't suck and actually release updates. I just wish it would be more than just 3+1, but it's still far longer than any other vendor. And they ditched the plastic crap backs for Galaxy S22, so there's that slight possibility...

 

OnePlus got turned into complete trainwreck and is now just a bland copy of Oppo's crap and for Nothing, it's hard to say if they'll be able to not suck like everyone else when it comes to software. It's basically a startup again and that's not helping.

If the back was removable and made of the same material the transparent game boys were made of, if gladly pay a thousand euros for it if the stick to current price trends.

 

But alas, part 1 will never happen, there's to much money in making phone disposable, and part 2 is not good enough to make me ditch my still perfectly functioning v10

Well, the phone is set to be revealed on July 12th. It is suspected to run mid-range (snapdragon 778G+?) hardware.
